Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing methionine and a salt thereof.
SOLUTION: The methionine is produced by passing 3-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia and carbon dioxide through steps of synthesis, hydrolysis and liberation. The nearly quantitatively obtained methionine has slight discoloration and good storage stability. Continuous production can be carried out in a large-scale apparatus by the process.

SOLUTION: This molded product has 300-850 kg/m3 bulk density, 63-5,000 μm particle spectrum and 85-95 mass % methionine content in a predominant amount based on the total mass. Furthermore, the methionine-containing molded product is preferably produced by separating water from an aqueous methionine suspension to 8-40 mass % based on the total mass, washing the resultant solid with water, preferably a mother liquor taken out of the production process, adding an organic binder such as methyl cellulose and/or an inorganic binder such as potassium (hydrogen)carbonate, a silicic salt filler and further a compound effective for a feed such as lysine, feeding the resultant mixture to a shaping process, extruding and drying the mixture.
