Abstract: A process for the continuous production of 3-halogen-propyl-organosilanes of formula RbH3-a-bXaSiCH2CH2CH2Y (I) is claimed by reaction of an alkyl halide (II) and a silane (III) containing at least one Si-H bond whereby a partial conversion of 10-80 % (w.r.t. the minor component) is achieved. In formula (I), R = methyl, ethyl, propyl, methoxy, ethoxy or propoxy X,Y = F, Cl, Br or I a,b, = 0-3 a+b = 1,2 or 3. Preferably the degree of conversion is 30-60 % and byproduct propene is separated off. The molar ratio of silane (III) to alkyl halide (II) is 0.5-1.5, preferably 0.5-1. The unconverted reactants are separated from the product and recycled to he reaction. The reaction occurs in the liquid phase at 60-160, preferably 80-140 degrees C in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst for 1-500 minutes. (I) is 3-chloropropyltrichlorosilane or 3-chloropropylmethyl dichlorosilane prepared by reaction of alkyl chloride with trichlorosilane or methyl dichlorosilane. The degree of conversion resulting from the reaction kinetics and catalyst is controlled by temperature and/or residence time in the reactor.

Abstract: A method for the oxidation of p-xylene (pX) and methyl p-toluate (pTE) with oxygen-containing gases in the Witten- Hercules process for production of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) in at least two successive part-stages in presence of a catalyst. The process comprises (a) at least one pX-rich part-stage in which part of the pX, and optionally recycled products with oxidisable components from further stages in the DMT process, is/are oxidised in presence of 5-30 wt% pTE (based on the oxidation mixture in this stage), and/or (b) at least one pTE- rich part-stage in which pTE and/or p-toluic acid (pTS), and optionally recycled products, is/are oxidised in presence of 2-30 wt% pX (based on pTE + pTS).
