Abstract: An electrolysis cell has filled liquid electrolyte and oxidizing or reducing gas compartments, separated by a gas diffusion electrode on which an ion exchanging separator is formed (on the electrolyte side) by single- or multi-stage application of a solution of an ion exchanger material in a solvent, with at least partial evaporation of the solvent after each coating stage. An electrolysis cell for carrying out chemical reactions includes a liquid electrolyte compartment and an oxidizing or reducing gas compartment, having inlet and outlet lines for electrolyte and gas respectively. The two compartments each contain electrically conductive filler and are separated by a gas diffusion electrode (GDE), combined with an ion exchanging separator (IES) on the electrolyte side. A current collector for the GDE is provided. The filler in the electrolyte compartment serves as counter-electrode. The novel feature is that IES is applied to GDE by single- or multi-stage coating of the electro-catalytic layer of GDE with a solution of an ion exchanger material in a solvent, with at least partial evaporation of the solvent after each coating stage.

Abstract: A platinum/ruthenium catalyst contains finely divided alloying particles on a powdered electrically conducting carrier material. The alloying particles have an average crystal size of 0.5-2 nm. An Independent claim is also included for the production of the platinum/ruthenium catalyst comprising suspending the carrier material in a solvent, coating by adding a preformed platinum/ruthenium alloy colloid stabilized with tensides at 20-110 degrees C, separating the suspension by removing the solvent form the liquid phase, washing and activating in inert gas by calcining at 200-400 degrees C.

Abstract: The cell removes a pollutant from gases, converting it by electrolytic action. It comprises a solid bed electrode (10) and complementary electrode (2), with an intervening separator (4). There is a system supplying (17) and distributing (15) a fluid electrolyte onto the solid bed electrode, which is collected (14) and flows away (18). An inlet and outlet (19, 20) are included for the gas. The complementary electrode is a gas diffusion electrode and on the side away from the bed, there is a chamber (6) with connections (7, 8) for gas flow. Also claimed is the removal of a pollutant from gases. The gas to be cleaned flows in co- or counter current to the liquid electrolyte over the solid bed, converting the impurity with an effective cell potential. The cell is operated as an irrigated bed reactor. The bed is cathodic with an oxidisable gas supplied to the gas diffusion electrode, or anodic for a reducible gas.
