Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate gas transport in a reactive layer and improve the access of a reaction gas to a catalyst by providing a reactive layer having a heterogeneous micro structure consisting of a catalyst impregnated with an ionomer and buried in the ionomer and the residual catalyst containing no ionomer, and specifying the ratio between these catalysts. SOLUTION: A reactive layer has a heterogeneous microstructure having a ratio by weight of a catalyst impregnated with an ionomer and buried in the ionomer to a catalyst containing no ionomer of 1:1 to 20:1, desirably, 3:1 to 10:1. According to this, extremely satisfactory getting-in and -out of a reaction gas and, further, delivery of a proton flow through the particle impregnated with the ionomer with a small loss can be attained, and the characteristic of the reactive layer can be optimized by properly selecting the ratio. The reactive layer comprises pores having diameters of 0.03-1 μm and has a pore capacity of 0.7-1.3 ml/g, and the thickness of the reactive layer is set to 5-100 μm.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve resistance against carbon monoxide by using alloy grains having the average crystal size of a specific value, and forming an electric conductivity carrier material with carbon black, graphitized carbon black, graphite or activated carbon. SOLUTION: Alloy grains having the average crystal size of 0.5-2 nm are used for this alloy catalyst, e.g. a Pt/Ru alloy catalyst having alloy grains of 2 nm or below has very good CO resistance up to the carbon monoxide concentration of 150 ppm in combustion gas, however the electrochemical activity of the catalyst deteriorates when the grain size becomes below 0.5 nm. The carbon monoxide adsorbed to platinum atoms is brought into contact with ruthenium atoms during the diffusion process on the alloy grains, it is oxidized into carbon dioxide under its existence, and the platinum surface can be effectively regenerated. The ratio of platinum/ruthenium alloy grains is set to the concentration of 10-50 wt.% against the total weight of the alloy catalyst.

Abstract: The invention relates to a membrane-electrode unit for polymer-electrolyte fuel cells. The membrane-electrode unit consists of a polymer electrolyte membrane and porous reaction layers applied to both sides comprising a catalyst and a proton-conducting polymer, a so-called ionomer. The membrane-electrode unit is characterized in that one part Al of the catalyst of the reaction layers is saturated with the ionomer and is embedded in the ionomer whereas one part A2 of the catalyst is kept free from the ionomer, where the parts Al and A2 are in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 20:1.

The catalyst contains the noble metals platinum and ruthenium on a finely divided, conductive support material. It is characterised in that the two noble metals are not alloyed with each other and are present in highly dispersed form on the support material, wherein the crystallite size of the platinum is less than 2 nm and that of the ruthenium is less than 1 nm.

Abstract: The invention concerns a PEM fuel cell stack consisting of one or more fuel cells (1) arranged on top of one another, each of which contains a membrane electrode assembly (2) between two electrically conductive bipolar plates (3,4), the surfaces o f which are equipped with flow channels (10) open on one side for the supply of reactive gases, whereby the membrane electrode assemblies each comprise a polymer electroly te membrane (5), both sides of which are in contact with a reaction layer (6,7) , whereby the surface area of the reaction layers is smaller than that of the polymer electrolyte membrane and a compressible, coarse-pore gas distribution layer (8,9) made from carbon fibre fabric is inserted between each reaction layer and the adjacent bipolar plates congruent to the reaction layers along with seals (11,12) in the area outside the surface covered by the gas distribution layers, whereby the gas distribution layers in the no-load condition display a thickness D1 and the seals a thickness D2. The P EM fuel cell stack is characterised in that the gas distribution layers in the PEM fuel cell stack are compressed to 25 to 60% of their original thickness.
