Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving hydrolysis of cyanuric chloride to DCHT-Na under use of caustic soda solution so that the reaction is surely controllable even in industrial scale. SOLUTION: In this producing method, alkali metal hydroxide or alkali earth metal hydroxide in an amount of 1-2.5 equivalent based on 1 mol cyanuric chloride is charged in an aqueous solution or suspension into a vessel and cyanuric chloride is weighed and fed in the form of powder or aqueous suspension to the vessel while keeping pH value of the liquid in the range of 9.5-14 and cooling the liquid and when charging amount of the alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide is stoichiometrically insufficient, residual amount of the above hydroxide including excessive amount up to 25% is weighed and fed during or after addition of cyanuric chloride in order to keep pH value of the liquid and the reaction is finished when the pH value does not substantially change any longer at selected temperature.

Abstract: Production of alkali(ne earth) metal salts of 2,4-dichloro-6-hydroxy-s-triazine by hydrolysis comprises dosing cyanuric chloride (I) powder or aqueous suspension into an aqueous solution or suspension of 1.2-5 equivalent alkali(ne earth) hydroxide (II)/mole (I) and keeping the pH at 9.5-14 at ≤ 10 degrees C. Production of alkali(ne earth) metal salts of 2,4-dichloro-6-hydroxy-s-triazine by hydrolysis comprises dosing cyanuric chloride (I) powder or aqueous suspension into an aqueous solution or suspension of 1.2-5 equivalent alkali(ne earth) hydroxide (II)/mole (I) and keeping the pH at 9.5-14 at ≤ 10 degrees C. If less than the stoichiometric amount of (II) is present, the rest, including up to 25% excess, is added during and/or after addition of (I) to maintain the pH. Reaction is stopped when the pH no longer changes at the selected temperature.

Commercial alkali cyanide granules comprise irregular particles: disadvantages are, in particular, the tendency to form dust and lumps. Alkali cyanide granules of the invention have practically no abrasion and a reduced tendency to form lumps. The granules are characterised by essentially spherical particles, particle diameters in the range from 0.1 to 20 mm, a bulk density above 600 g/dm , an abrasion of less than 1% and a caking index of at most 4. The granules can be prepared by fluidised-bed spray granulation, by an aqueous solution containing an alkali cyanide being sprayed on alkali cyanide nuclei in a fluidised bed and water being evaporated.
