Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up the recovery treatment of the performance of a catalyst by forming an inside layer to be formed on a high performance catalyst on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component and forming an outside layer through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material. SOLUTION: A three-dimensional catalyst to be used for cleaning contaminants such as CO, HC and NOx contained in an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, has an inside and an outside layer containing a precious metal of the platinum family stacked on a carrier material, formed on an inactive carrier. In this catalyst, the inside layer is formed on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component. The outside layer is formed through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material and at the same time, adding a second oxygen occlusion component. Thus it is possible to speed up the recovery treatment of the catalyst after its aging at a high temperature under lean exhaust gas conditions by forming the double-layer catalyst as described.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst containing only palladium of superior resistance to heat and resistant to aging which can be prepared with good effect in the point of expense, and provided with good conversion rate of hydrocarbon, carbon oxide and nitrogen oxide. SOLUTION: A ternary catalyst containing only palladium of one layer of high activities and resistance to heat contains also at least one kind of very fine cerium/zirconium-mixed oxide, and in some cases, the high dispersion properties of very fine nickel oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide and barium oxide in addition to those of fine and stabilized active aluminum oxide. Palladium is dispersed sufficiently and uniformly in all catalysts.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an oxygen storage material, to provide a method for producing the material and the use of the material in an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When the catalyst is produced, hydroxide precursors of a mixed oxide are wet-chemically prepared by a known method and then dried at 80-300 deg.C to form an oxide/hydroxide/carbonate mixture and this dry mixture is treated in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere at 600-900 deg.C for 1-10 hr. The resulting catalyst has better dynamic behavior than a conventional catalyst.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a waste gas cleaning catalyst having an increased rate of conversion of hydrocarbons as well as improved aging stability by incorporating metals of the Pt group as components having catalytic action and forming two specified laminated functional layers on a carrier. SOLUTION: This waste gas cleaning catalyst has a 1st functional layer contg. a mixture of a 1st catalyst with zeolite and a 2nd functional layer contg. a mixture of a 2nd catalyst with zeolite on the 1st functional layer. The molar ratio of SiO2 to Al2 O3 in the zeolite is >40, Pd and Rh exist as metals of the Pt group and these metals are separately contained in the 1st and 2nd catalysts different from each other in catalytic action. One of the catalysts contains Pd or Pd and Pt and has oxidation action. The other contains Rh or Rh and Pt and has reduction action.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable regulation of operation employing a second λ-sensor when in case of rich exhaust gas, the sensor voltage of the second λ-sensor does not exceed a set voltage by a value widely exceeding a predetermined voltage difference, a method for operating an exhaust emission control device for a gasoline engine. SOLUTION: Operation is effected mainly in a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and operation is performed in a rich air-fuel ratio during acceleration or a full load operation. In this case, the exhaust gas purifying device is provided with a three-dimensional catalyst and the first λ-sensor followed by the catalyst and the second λ-sensor proceeded by the catalyst. The air-fuel ratio is regulated by using a signal from the first λ-sensor and a signal from the second λ-sensor is used in monitoring (trim control) of the first λ-sensor and diagnosis of operation of the catalyst.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an oxygen storage material having high temp. stability used for the purification of exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The oxygen storage material contains cerium oxide and at least one stabilizer selected from the group comprising praseodymium oxide, lanthanum oxide, yttrium oxide and neodymium oxide and has >=20 m /g, advantageously >=30 m /g specific surface area even after firing at 900 deg.C for 10 hr in air. One or more such stabilizers and, optionally, the cerium oxide exist in a highly dispersed form on the surface of a carrier material having a large surface area. The oxygen storage material has high temp. stability, is excellent in long-time stability, can easily be produced and can be used in the production of an exhaust gas purification catalyst.

SOLUTION: In the method for depositing catalytic active components on carrier substances having high specific area by dispersing the carrier substances in water and mixing the dispersion liquid 2 with an aqueous solution 5 of soluble porecursors of catalytic active components, the pH value of the dispersion liquid is adjusted to 6-8 and the liquid is agitated continuously, and an aqueous solution 5 of the precursors is fed into the dispension liquid 2 by a capillary injection and thereafter, if required, a diluted base is injected through a capillary to deposit the precursors 5 of catalytic active components on the carrier substances.
