    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramic honeycomb body for a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas, which has a cylindrical form provided with first and second end surfaces and a cylindrical outer circumference surface, in which a plurality of passages penetrate in parallel in the axis direction from one end surface to the other, in which the passages formed by passage walls are arranged in a regular pattern over the cross section, of which the center portion is encircled by the outer edge portion of the honeycomb body having the thickness of the plurality of passage diameters, and of which the compression strength is improved in a radius direction. SOLUTION: Ceramic materials of the outer circumference surface of the cylinder and the passage walls in the region of the outer end of the honeycomb body are reinforced by adhering or inserting single or plural inorganic materials to enhance the mechanical stability.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up the recovery treatment of the performance of a catalyst by forming an inside layer to be formed on a high performance catalyst on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component and forming an outside layer through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material. SOLUTION: A three-dimensional catalyst to be used for cleaning contaminants such as CO, HC and NOx contained in an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, has an inside and an outside layer containing a precious metal of the platinum family stacked on a carrier material, formed on an inactive carrier. In this catalyst, the inside layer is formed on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component. The outside layer is formed through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material and at the same time, adding a second oxygen occlusion component. Thus it is possible to speed up the recovery treatment of the catalyst after its aging at a high temperature under lean exhaust gas conditions by forming the double-layer catalyst as described.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid consumption of a fuel caused by the concn. increasing period which periodically occurs, by successively introducing the exhaust gas of a lean engine into a permanent reduction catalyst and a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst to purify the gas. SOLUTION: The exhaust gas system 2 of a lean engine 1 is equipped with two converters 3, 4. The converter 3 in the first stage contains a permanent reduction catalyst, while the converter 4 in the second stage contains a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst. Both of the catalysts in the converters 3, 4 can be theoretically assembled in one converter casing, however, it is preferable to assemble these catalysts separately in two converter casings separated from each other so as to keep the exhaust gas temp. in the storage catalyst in the main duration time of operation to the optimum temp. range for the storage catalyst. As for the permanent reduction catalyst used, an iridium-contg. catalyst or copper- contg. zeolite catalyst can be used.
