Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramic honeycomb body for a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas, which has a cylindrical form provided with first and second end surfaces and a cylindrical outer circumference surface, in which a plurality of passages penetrate in parallel in the axis direction from one end surface to the other, in which the passages formed by passage walls are arranged in a regular pattern over the cross section, of which the center portion is encircled by the outer edge portion of the honeycomb body having the thickness of the plurality of passage diameters, and of which the compression strength is improved in a radius direction. SOLUTION: Ceramic materials of the outer circumference surface of the cylinder and the passage walls in the region of the outer end of the honeycomb body are reinforced by adhering or inserting single or plural inorganic materials to enhance the mechanical stability.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constituted catalyst to be subjected to selective reducing nitrogen oxide contained in the lean exhaust gas flow of an internal combustion engine under the use of a compound hydrolysable into ammonia. SOLUTION: This catalyst has a reduction catalyst for selectively reducing nitrogen oxide by ammonia and a hydrolytic catalyst, for hydrolyzing a compound hydrolyzable into ammonia. The hydrolytic catalyst is then provided on the reduction catalyst in the coating state. Therefore, the structural length which is smaller than a conventional system is made possible, and substantially effective thermal characteristic are provided.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for cleaning the exhaust gas of an automobile diesel engine. SOLUTION: The catalyst contains at least one kind of zeolite and additionally at least one kind of carrier oxide consisting of aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and aluminum silicate and at least one kind of noble metal consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium and iridium, and an atom of noble metal has an average oxidation number smaller than +2.5, and the atom has a metal ligand larger than 3 in average and an oxygen ligand smaller than 3, and the noble metals exist on the zeolite and the carrier oxide in the form of the fine crystal having 1-6 nm average particle size.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric energy generating method using a fuel cell. SOLUTION: The organic fuel is reformed, and the carbon monoxide is eliminated from the reformed material by treating the reformed material in the bioreactor containing thermophilic micro-organism strain by metabolizing the carbon monoxide to convert into carbon dioxide and hydrogen in the anaerobic condition, and the electric energy is generated, and hydrogen contained in the reformed material is allowed to react with oxygen in the fuel cell. Since the micro-organism has the remarkable thermophilic characteristic, temperature can be raised to 90 deg.C, and when generating the electric energy in the fuel cell, the oxygen is not contained in the gas after reforming the gas in the reformer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up the recovery treatment of the performance of a catalyst by forming an inside layer to be formed on a high performance catalyst on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component and forming an outside layer through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material. SOLUTION: A three-dimensional catalyst to be used for cleaning contaminants such as CO, HC and NOx contained in an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, has an inside and an outside layer containing a precious metal of the platinum family stacked on a carrier material, formed on an inactive carrier. In this catalyst, the inside layer is formed on a first carrier material through adding platinum stacked on a first oxygen occlusion component. The outside layer is formed through adding the platinum and rhodium stacked on a second carrier material and at the same time, adding a second oxygen occlusion component. Thus it is possible to speed up the recovery treatment of the catalyst after its aging at a high temperature under lean exhaust gas conditions by forming the double-layer catalyst as described.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid consumption of a fuel caused by the concn. increasing period which periodically occurs, by successively introducing the exhaust gas of a lean engine into a permanent reduction catalyst and a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst to purify the gas. SOLUTION: The exhaust gas system 2 of a lean engine 1 is equipped with two converters 3, 4. The converter 3 in the first stage contains a permanent reduction catalyst, while the converter 4 in the second stage contains a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst. Both of the catalysts in the converters 3, 4 can be theoretically assembled in one converter casing, however, it is preferable to assemble these catalysts separately in two converter casings separated from each other so as to keep the exhaust gas temp. in the storage catalyst in the main duration time of operation to the optimum temp. range for the storage catalyst. As for the permanent reduction catalyst used, an iridium-contg. catalyst or copper- contg. zeolite catalyst can be used.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an oxygen storage material, to provide a method for producing the material and the use of the material in an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When the catalyst is produced, hydroxide precursors of a mixed oxide are wet-chemically prepared by a known method and then dried at 80-300 deg.C to form an oxide/hydroxide/carbonate mixture and this dry mixture is treated in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere at 600-900 deg.C for 1-10 hr. The resulting catalyst has better dynamic behavior than a conventional catalyst.
