    Abstract: 1511720 Silica suspensions DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 26 Sept 1975 [5 Oct 1974] 39504/75 Heading C1A A silica suspension of at least 12% solids is prepared by continuously introducing a silica filter cake and a suspending agent (e.g. dilute aqueous acid) into a vessel with a stirrer, the ratio of vessel diameter to diameter of the widest part of the stirrer being at most 3:1, the ratio of vessel diameter to filling level being at least 1:2, and the vessel containing at least 1À5 kg. of silica suspension per kg. of filter cake input; stirring the suspension with the stirrer having a peripheral speed of 20-30 m./sec., the suspension having a pH of at most 4; and removing suspension from the zone of maximum turbulence.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for producing a sprayable highly concentrated precipitating silica suspension which has a low grit content and contains 12%, preferably more than 18% of solids, which comprises continuously feeding a silica filter cake and a dispersing agent by means of feed members into a dissolver tank while maintaining a pH value of not more than 4, and stirring the mixture in said tank by means of a stirring dissolver, the ratio of the tank diameter to the diameter of the stirring dissolver being 3:1, the maximum ratio of dissolver tank diameter to height of filling of the tank being 1:2, and at least 1.5 to 2 kg of silica suspension being present in the tank per 1 kg of silica filter cake fed therein, said stirring being carried out by the dissolver at a peripheral speed of 20 to 30 metres per second, the silica filter cake and dispersing agent being withdrawn from a zone of maximum turbulence by a separating member or a mixer.

    Abstract: A mass of finely divided material is confined in a chamber. Two rollers are arranged for rotation in the chamber in axial parallelism with one another and defined with each other a narrow longitudinally extending gap. At least one of the rollers has a circumferential wall composed of gas-permeable porous material. This one roller is hollow and arranged to communicate with a source of underpressure so that, as the roller rotates, the particulate material is attracted onto its outer surface forming a layer thereon which is subjected to substantial compaction when it passes through the gap between the two rollers. The rollers rotate in opposite direction. The compacted material is removed from the outer surface of the roller or rollers and subdivided into portions of desired size.

    Abstract: The present invention provides in a process for producing a finely divided silica by spray drying in a spray drier a sprayable highly concentrated silica suspension, which is low in grit content the improvement in which the spray drying is carried out in the presence of a base or of a basic-reacting substance in an amount sufficient for complete or partial neutralization of the acid present in the suspension originating as acid used as a dispersing agent or of acid still present in redispersed filter cake or for alkaline adjustment to yield a dried silica with a pH value greater than 6.0.
