Abstract: 1,244,780. Ammonium thiocyanate. DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT. 14 Aug., 1969 [14 Aug., 1968], No. 40627/69. Heading C1A. Ammonium thiocyanate is prepared by reaction of anhydrous ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and sulphur in a reaction medium of ammonium thiocyanate, and ammonium polysulphide, in ammonia solution. The sulphur may be added before reaction with hydrogen cyanide, thus permitting a continuous process wherein reaction mixture is bled off so that the rate of removal of ammonium thiocyanate is equal to the rate of its formation, whilst the remainder of the reaction mixture is recycled for addition of ammonia and sulphur. At normal pressures the reaction is carried out at 0-70‹ C., but increased pressure and temperature may be employed. Ammonia and hydrogen sulphide are removed from the product by evaporation and any sulphur remaining is removed by recrystallization of the thiocyanate.

Abstract: Alkali thiocyanates are prepared by reacting alkali cyanides with sulfur in the presence of alkali sulfide in a molar amount of 1:1000 to 1:2000 as a solubilizer for the sulfur. The reaction is carried out above the melting point of sulfur, preferably in an alkali thiocyanate solution. The alkali sulfide is then converted to the sulfate by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide.
