Abstract: A method of preparation for acetals utilizing saturated or unsaturated aldehydes, in particular, the preparation of dimethylacetals of acetaldehyde, acrolein and methacrolein. The production of the acetal takes place in a liquid phase in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, such as a strongly acidic ion exchange resin or zeolite. The conversion mixture is extracted by means of water and by means of water insoluble organic solvents. There is obtained not only the desired acetals, but in addition also the unconverted initial quantities of the starting materials by a simple method and with very good yields.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing acrolein from propylene and methacrolein from isobutylene or tertiary butanol, by oxidation in oxygen-containing gas mixtures on specially prepared coated catalysts comprised of an inert support and a coating, enclosing this support, of an oxidic catalyst material containing the elements nickel, cobalt, iron, bismuth, phosphorus, molybdenum and tantalum or samarium and, if appropriate, also alkali metal or alkaline earth metal in certain atomic ratios. This coated catalyst is obtained by spraying a suspension of the starting material for the coating, which suspension contains a binder and, if appropriate, a pore-former, from above in an increasing amount onto a bed of the support, which bed is mechanically agitated and loosened up by a gas stream blow in from below, the ratio between suspending medium sprayed on and removed again by the gas stream remaining approximately constant. The thermal expansion coefficient of the precursor as a dry powder must not deviate by more than 15% from the coefficient of the support. The coating is densified by further agitation, and the material is dried in the continuing gas stream and heat-treated, if appropriate after decomposition of an added pore-former.

Abstract: Epoxidized polybutadienes with an average molecular weight of 500 to 100,000 and a certain content of epoxide oxygen were prepared from the corresponding polybutadienes with use of perpropionic acid in a benzene solution. The solution can also be employed in unpurified form with maximum contents of 1.5 weight percent hydrogen peroxide 1.5 weight percent of water, and about 800 ppm of mineral acid.

Abstract: A continuous process for the production of 3-cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde by reaction of acrolein with butadiene at an elevated temperature and increased pressure is described in which good yields are obtained by establishing the weight ratio of the starting substances fed per time unit into a circulation reactor in relation to the reaction mixture circulated per time unit in the range of 1:5 to 1:60 and by carrying out a secondary reaction in successive reactors.

Abstract: Prodn. comprises treating chlorohydroxypropyl trialkylammonium salts (II) with a basic ion exchanger in aq. medium. Pref. (II) have formula Z1.CH2.CHZ2.CH2.+NR1R2R3 X- (one of Z1 and Z2 is chloro, the other hydroxy; R1-R3 are each 1-2C alkyl, or R1 is methyl and R2 and R3 are together 4-5C alkylene; X is nitrate, bromide, chloride or a 'half sulphate' anion). Esp. all R's are methyl and X is chloro. Pref. ion exchangers are medium to very strongly basic resins, e.g. 'Lewatit" (RTM) and reaction is at 0-50, esp. about 25, deg. C. Pref. (II) is supplied as an almost satd. aq. soln. to a column of resin, then (I) eluted with water. (I) are useful as etherifying agents for prodn. of cationic starch ethers. The use of ion exchanger rather than conventional bases such as NaOH, gives an excellent yield of prod. pure enough for direct reaction with starch.

Abstract: Pure racemic tartaric acid and mesotartaric acid are prepd. by reaction of an alakali metal maleate with aq. H2O2 in the presence of an alkali metal tungstate with a mole ratio of H2O2:maleic acid greater than 1 and the alkali salts of cis-epoxysuccinic acid formed with the alkali metal tungstate, opt. after decompsn. of excess H2O2, are converted to free cis-epoxysuccinic acid and free tungstic acid by passage through a strong acid cation-exchanger and hydrolysis of the cis-epoxysuccinic acid into the desired prodt. is effected either in the presence or absence of the tungstic acid, the tungstic acid being sepd. by an anion-exchanger, and the racemic tartaric acid is then sepd. by crystallisation in known manner from the hydrolysate free of tungstic acid, opt. by evapn. of water and lowering of the temp., after which the mesotartaric acid remaining in the mother-liquor is obtd. by crystallisation by evapn. to dryness opt. in a mixt. with racemic tartaric acid, unreacted cis-epoxy-succinic acid and maleic acid, whilst the anion-exchanger charged with tungstic acid is regenerated in known manner by a dilute alkali soln. and the alkali metal tungstate obtd. is opt. directly recycled to the epoxidation stage, after treatment with active carbon. The mole ratio of H2O2:maleic acid is pref. 1.01-5:1 esp. 1.1-1.3:1. The process is pref. carried out in a series of circulating reactors. Suitable alkali metal maleates and tungstates are of K, Na and ammonium. Racemic tartaric acid is obtd. at very pure state suitable for use in foodstuffs and in high yield.
