Abstract: Sodium azide is prepared by reacting sodium monoxide, nitrous oxide and ammonia and/or sodium amide in the absence of solvents, the molar ratio of Na2O:NH3:NaNH2 being 2-Y:1-Y:Y where O\sEY\sE1. The sodium monoxide and sodium amide may be used in a molar ratio of 1:1 (i.e. Y=1). The sodium monoxide (or mixtures thereof with sodium amide) is preferably continuously reacted with nitrous oxide. The solid reactants are preferably diluted with preformed reaction products and the diluted solid reactants are kept in motion while reacting with the gaseous portion of the reactants.
