[Also in Division C2] Herbicidal compositions comprise a carrier, and 1,3,5-triazine derivatives of formula:- wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 may be the same or different, and are hydrogen, C 1 to C 6 alkyl or alkenyl, aryl, or alkoxyaryl with C 1 to C 6 in the alkoxy group; Z is halogen, or -CN, CCl 3 , -CHCl 2 , -CH 2 Cl, -SR, -OR, -OH, -OM, -SO 3 H or SO 3 M, in which M is one equivalent of a metal and R is C 1 to C 6 alkyl or alkenyl; Q is: or -SO 2 R 4 wherein R 4 has the meanings given for R 1 above; and X and Y may be the same or different and are halogen, -OH, -OM, -OR 4 . -NH 2 , -NHR 4 , or NR 4 R 5 , wherein M and R 4 are as above and R 4 may additionally be chlorophenyl, and R 5 has the same meaning as R 4 . Compositions may take the form of solutions of the compound in organic solvents, which may be diluted with water before use, when the active ingredient precipitates out to form a suspension; this may be stabilised with appropriate surface active additives; the compositions may be in the form of a dusting or wettable powder, or a paste, with the usual solid carriers, and may also contain sticking agents. Other active ingredients, such as insecticides, fungicides, and fertilisers may be present; the compositions of the invention have pre- and post-emergence herbicidal properties, selective herbicidal, defoliative, and growth-hindering properties, and may also be used for soil sterilisation.
