Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an activated fundamental metal fixed bed catalyst for hydrogenating saturated and unsaturated esters under a condition milder than existing technique with better activity and selectivity. SOLUTION: A mixture consisting of a catalyst metal, which consists of at least one kind of a Raney process metal being a catalytically active metal, an alloy component possible to be eluted and, if necessary, a cocatalyst, at least one kind of a binder comprising at least one king of a pure Raney process alloy and a wetting agent is homogenized and molded to obtain a catalyst precursor, which is, in turn, baked at a temp. lower that 850 deg.C and the alloy component possible to be eluted is eluted by using alkali until the thickness of an activated outer layer becomes 0.05-1 mm to activate the sintered catalyst precursor and this catalyst precursor is succeedingly washed and the obtained catalyst is introduced into a perrhenic acid soln. or a soln. of other rhenium salt over a sufficient time to be activated and the activated catalyst is doped with rhenium as a cocatalyst to produce a molded artivated Raney metal fixed bed catalyst.

Abstract: A shaped Raney metal fixed bed catalyst is obtained by homogenizing a mixture of powders consisting of catalyst alloy, a binder, a moistening agent and optionally an additive, shaping to form a molded catalyst precursor which is calcined below 850 deg C to form sintered catalyst precursor and activating. The final catalyst is washed and doped with rhenium. A mixture of powders consisting of catalyst alloy, a binder, a moistening agent and optionally an additive selected from shaping aid, lubricant, plasticizer, pore producer, is homogenized. The catalyst alloy consist of at least one Raney metal as catalytically active metal, a leachable alloy component and optionally a promoter. The homogenized product is shaped to form a molded catalyst precursor which is calcined below 850 deg C to form sintered catalyst precursor and activated by leaching the leachable alloy component with alkali. An activated outer layer of thickness 0.05-1 mm, is formed. The final catalyst is washed and doped with rhenium by introducing into a perrhenic acid solution of sufficient pH for preset time to fix all rhenium on the catalyst. An Independent claim is also included for the production of fixed bed catalyst.
