Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ellectrochemically purify gas using a simple electrtolytic bath by making a counter electrode a gas diffusion electrode and installing a chamber having a gas supplying device and a gas discharging device on the opposite side of a fixed bed electrode of the counter electrode. SOLUTION: Gas to be purified and liquid electrolyte are led in a counter current or parallel current through the fixed bed electrode 10 of an electrolytic bath 1, and impurities are reacted at effective elctrolytic bath voltage, and electrochemically convertible impurities are removed electrolytically from gas. The electrolytic bath 1 is composed of the fixed electrode 10, a counter electrode 2 separated from the electrode 10 by a separator 4, liquid electrolyte supplying and discharging devices 17, 18, a raw gas inlet 19, a raw gas outlet 20, and a chamber 6 having a gas supplying and discharging devices 7, 8 to be attached to the counter electrode 2. The fixed electrode 10 is used as a dropping bed, raw gas is introduced from the inlet 19, electrolyte is introduced from the device 17 to be contacted in a parallel current or a counter current. In this process, hydrogen is supplied to a gas diffusion electrode 2 during reductive purification, while oxygen is supplied during oxidative purification.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain hydrophobized oxides having a markedly low content of acidic by-products by hydrophobizing pyrolytically obtained metal and/or metalloid oxides, oxide mixture or mixed oxide with a hydrophobizing agent so that the formed oxide may contain dimethylsilyl groups and monomethylsilyl groups in a specified ratio. SOLUTION: Subsequently to the production, an acidic oxide, (e.g. Aerosil) is mixed with a hydrophobizing agent previously vaporized in an evaporator 1 in a conduit 2, and together with steam generated in an evaporator 4 is continuously treated in a fluidized bed 1. The hydrophobization temperature is about 20 to about 800 deg.C, advantageously, about 400 to about 600 deg.C. The hydrophobizing agent used is a halogen-free acyclic siloxane, a monocyclic methylcyclosiloxane mixture D3-D9, advantageously, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane D4. The hydrophobization temperature is controlled so that the ratio of dimethylsilyl groups to monomethylsilyl groups may fall within the range of 100/0 to 50/50. The adherent acid and excessive hydrophobizing agent are removed in a countercurrent fluidized bed 2.

Abstract: The cell removes a pollutant from gases, converting it by electrolytic action. It comprises a solid bed electrode (10) and complementary electrode (2), with an intervening separator (4). There is a system supplying (17) and distributing (15) a fluid electrolyte onto the solid bed electrode, which is collected (14) and flows away (18). An inlet and outlet (19, 20) are included for the gas. The complementary electrode is a gas diffusion electrode and on the side away from the bed, there is a chamber (6) with connections (7, 8) for gas flow. Also claimed is the removal of a pollutant from gases. The gas to be cleaned flows in co- or counter current to the liquid electrolyte over the solid bed, converting the impurity with an effective cell potential. The cell is operated as an irrigated bed reactor. The bed is cathodic with an oxidisable gas supplied to the gas diffusion electrode, or anodic for a reducible gas.
