    Abstract: There is disclosed herein a ferroelectric liquid crystal electro-optical apparatus of the matrix type comprising a liquid crystal cell having first and second electrode substrates which include n striped line electrodes and m striped column electrodes, respectively, facing at right angles each other. A ferroelectric liquid crystal is put in therebetween so as to form n by m indication picture elements. Also included in the apparatus a scanning drive device adapted to supply a scanning signal and a data signal to the n striped line electrodes and the m striped column electrodes, respectively. The ferroelectric liquid crystal shows three stable states in accordance with an application voltage and has a light transmittance with a hysteresis sufficient to a dynamic drive in accordance with increase or decrease in the application voltage in a predetermined voltage range. The scanning drive device produces a first combination signal as a signal running to variation from a voltage below a reference voltage in a predetermined one polarity voltage range to a voltage above the reference voltage and produces a second combination signal as a signal which does not exceeds the reference voltage in the range, and supplies a direct-current combination signal between the electrodes after the supply of the first or second combination signal thereto.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal cell which minimizes disordered orientation occurring with temperature changes even across a wide range, to exhibit good contrast and high reliability, as well as a smectic liquid crystal composition for use the liquid crystal cell are provided. In smectic liquid crystal compositions having a layer construction in the liquid crystal molecular arrangement, it was found that antiferroelectric liquid crystal compositions resistant to variation in the layer spacing of the smectic phase due to temperature changes are resistant to disordered orientation. Specifically, if the antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition contains at lest 45 wt % of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound with roughly constant layer spacing in a temperature range from the temperature t1 which gives the minimum value for the layer spacing of the smectic CA* phase to -20 DEG C., no disordered liquid crystal orientation results even after cold/hot temperature cycles. An even greater effect is achieved if the spontaneous polarization at of the composition at temperature t1 is at least 160 nC/cm2.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce a liquid crystal electro-optical element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal which shows first to third stable states according to electric fields, by heating the ferroelectric liquid crystal to change into an isotropic liquid, filling the space between substrates with the isotropic liquid, and cooling the liquid to change into a chiral smectic phase. SOLUTION: A ferroelectric liquid crystal 6 in which the molecular orientation shows different first to third stable states when no electric field is applied or an electric field in one direction or an electric field in other direction is applied, respectively, is heated to obtain an isotropic liquid. The obtd. isotropic liquid is supplied to fill the space between a pair of electrode substrates 1, 2 and cooled to obtain a chiral smectic phase of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 6. By changing the liquid crystal into an isotropic liquid, it can be easily supplied to fill between the electrode substrates 1, 2. By cooling after filling, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 6 is changed into a chiral smectic phase having desired three states. The cooling process is preferably carried out at 0.1 to 1.0 deg.C/min cooling rate.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain such a threshold that transmittance of light begins to change at specified absolute voltage or higher by specifying the relation of pretilt angles and reverse tilt given to each of a first electrode substrate and a second electrode substrate. SOLUTION: When the voltage applied on both electrode substrates 11, 12 is low, liquid crystal molecules do not rotate. When a specified high voltage is applied, liquid crystal molecules 13a (negative side liquid crystal molecule) on the negative side of the center line of a ferroelectric liquid crystal 13 rotate in the opposite direction to the rotation direction of liquid crystal molecules 13a (the other side liquid crystal molecules) on the other side of the center line of the liquid crystal 13. Therefore, the negative side liquid crystal molecules collide with the other side liquid crystal molecules near the center line, which results that the energy loss in the liquid crystal 13 is largely increased compared with the case of the negative liquid crystal molecules rotating in the same direction as that of the other side liquid crystal molecules. Namely, each molecule 13a of the liquid crystal 13 does not rotate when the voltage applied on substrates 11, 12 is low, but just begins to rotate when a specified high voltage is applied. This means the liquid crystal 13 has a sharp threshold.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a liquid crystal display with a fresh drive using a hysteresis characteristic of a ferroelectric liquid crystal by using an applied voltage of a voltage exceeding a first threshold value, and performing a display, using a ferroelectric liquid crystal for keeping a second steady state with a first hysteresis characteristic and holding the display. SOLUTION: When dynamic drive is performed, since a bias voltage is applied even to a non-selection point, the matter that the voltage applied to the non- selection point is the threshold value or below is required. Further, when the voltage applied to the non-selection point is set to the value between the threshold value 1 and the threshold value 2, and the voltage applied to a dark displayed point is set to the value between the threshold values 2, 3, and the voltage applied to a bright displayed point is set to the value higher than the threshold value 1, the dynamic drive with a high contrast ratio and capable of holding the display also is facilitated.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a smectic liq. crystal with a smectic CA* or IA* phase hardly exhibiting the alignment disorder due to temp. change by using a mixture of two liq. crystal compds., one having an almost const. temp. dependence of the interlayer distance and the other, a variable temp. dependence. SOLUTION: This liq. crystal exhibits a smectic CA* or IA* phase and is a mixture comprising a first smectic liq. crystal compd. having an almost const. temp. dependence of the interlayer distance and a second smectic liq. crystal compd. having a variable temp. dependence, the first compd. being contained in a concn. of 45wt.% or higher. The liq. crystal can decrease the light leak after the heat cycle test to 0.1% or lower, and the leak can be further decreased by increasing the content of the first compd. to 50% or higher, still pref. to 60% or higher. The initial alignment darkness with a small leak of light during dark display can be realized by using an antiferroelectric liq. crystal compd. represented by the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each 2-20C alkyl, alkoxy, etc.; and Z1 , Z2 , and Z3 are each H or halogen) as the second compd.
