Abstract:
Disclosed are cylic phosphate esters of fumarate- or maleic acids suitable for use as a comonomer, capable of being copolymerized with a monovinylidene aromatic compounds to impart flame resistant properties to the resultant copolymers.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an absorbent, extruded, open cell thermoplastic foam. The foam has an open cell content of about 50 percent or more and an average cell size of up to about 1.5 millimeters. The foam is capable of absorbing a liquid at about 50 percent or more of its theoretical volume capacity when absorbing a liquid. The foam preferably has an average equivalent pore size of about 5 micrometers or more. The foam preferably has a structure substantially of cell walls and cell struts. Further disclosed is a method for absorbing a liquid employing the foam by elongation of the extrudate of the extrusion die. Further disclosed is a method of enhancing absorbency of an open cell foam by applying a surfactant to an exposed surface of the foam such that it remains at the surface and does not infiltrate a substantial distance into the foam. Further disclosed is a meat tray and a diaper containing the foam.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a compatibilized carbon black useful in melt processing of plastic material. The carbon black is coated with a compatibilizing agent which enhances the dispersibility of the carbon black in a melt of the plastic material. Further disclosed are processes for making plastic foam structures with the compatibilized carbon black.
Abstract:
Flame retardant alkenylaromatic thermoplastic resin compositions are provided comprising 100 parts alkenylaromatic polymer, 0.2 to 5 parts of at least one brominated aliphatic compound, 0.5 to 3 parts of at least one other and different brominated organic compound having a higher volatilization temperature and greater heat stability than said brominated aliphatic compound and from 0.05 to 5 parts of at least one melt flow promoter.
Abstract:
The compositions of the present invention comprise at least one substantially random interpolymer (or blends with other thermoplastics), one or more flame retardant compounds and, optionally one or more flame-retardant synergists. For levels of flame retardants which yield a halogen content of about 0.05 to about 50 parts-per-hundred resin (phr), depending on whether the structure is foamed or not, which in turn result in LOI levels greater than or equal to about 23% oxygen, the compositions of the present invention unexpectedly still retain desirable mechanical properties such as compressive strength, toughness, and elasticity.

Abstract:
Fibrous thermal insulation comprises an intimate blend of A) non-graphitic carbonized fibers having an LOI value greater than 40, a percentage char value greater than 65, and a thermal conductivity less than 1.7 W/(m. K) (1.7 W/m. C)), and B) hollow thermoplastic fibers.
