Abstract:
A vehicle windshield display system (12) for detecting obstruction of a vehicle (10) operator (16)'s field of view (14) by a windshield display (18). The system (12) provides closed-loop feedback to perform a visual check of what is actually being displayed on a windshield display (18) in order to avoid obstructing an operator (16)'s field of view (14). The system (12) includes a windshield display (18) configured to be installed into a vehicle (10) and configured to display a graphic (20) in a field of view (14) of an operator (16) of the vehicle (10), a camera (22) configured to determine an image of the graphic (20) displayed by the windshield display (18), and a controller (28) configured to determine if the image indicates that field of view (14) is obstructed. The camera (22) is used to monitor the windshield display (18) and provide feedback to the controller (28) so that appropriate adjustments to the graphic (20) being displayed can be made.

Abstract:
A display system (22) and method provides images viewable within an electrically controllable viewing window for controlled viewing by the driver (16) and passenger (18) in a vehicle (10). The display system (22) includes a display (34) for generating an image that is viewable within a viewing window (56, 56'), and a backlight (28) disposed behind the display (34) for generating light for illuminating the display (34). The display system (22) has a light control medium (30, 32) for controlling directivity of the light illuminated on the display (34). The display system (22) further has a control device (40, 42) for controlling the light control medium (30, 32) to change the viewing window (56, 56') to control images for viewing by the driver (16) to reduce distraction thereof.
Abstract:
A windshield display system (10) and method (400) of operating the same configured to detect an obstruction of light projected by the system (10). A light source (22) emits a light beam (24) that reflects off a scanning mirror (26) to direct the light beam (24) to a desired on a windshield (12). The system (10) includes a light detector (32) configured to detect emitted light (34) generated in response to the light beam (24) illuminating the desired location (28). The system (10) is arranged so the light beam (24) and the emitted light (34) that is detected travel essentially the same light path (30) between the scanning mirror (26) and the windshield (12). As such, an obstruction of the light path (30) is readily detected based only on the intensity of the emitted light (34) detected by the light detector (32).
