Methods for recycling carbon fibers are disclosed. The methods can include providing at least one object comprising carbon fibers and resin, and contacting the object with at least one light beam to produce recycled carbon fibers. Systems that implement the disclosed methods are also provided.

The method may include providing a carbon-containing polymeric material, and contacting the carbon-containing polymeric material with light, heat or both to produce the carbon aerogel. Methods described herein generally relate to producing patterned graphene. The method may include irradiating at least one focal point on a surface of a metal substrate with a laser beam in the presence of carbon dioxide, wherein the laser beam is generated by an ultra-short pulse laser; and causing the laser beam to move relative to the surface of the metal substrate such that the at least one focal point is displaced along a pattern on the surface, thereby producing a patterned graphene. Apparatuses for producing patterned graphene are also disclosed.

Methods for converting carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into graphene are described. The methods include contacting a metal with gaseous carbon dioxide,and irradiating a surface of the metal with at least one laser beam to convert the gaseous carbon dioxide into graphene on the surface of the metal. Systems for converting carbon dioxide into graphene are also described.

Methods of making metal oxide-graphene composites are disclosed. The methods can include, for example, providing a composition including graphene oxide and at least one substrate, the composition being dispersed in a liquid medium. The methods can also include, for example, providing a composition including graphene oxide and at least one substrate, heating the composition, and cooling the composition. Compositions useful for performing the methods and composites obtained by the process are also disclosed.
