    Abstract: A stratified bed of ion exchange resins is regenerated by countercurrent or upflow regeneration. Expansion of the bed is prevented by returning used regenerant solution to the top of the bed and pumping the returned regenerant solution downwardly through the layer of resin at the top of the bed. Recycling of the used regenerant solution also regenerates the upper layer of resin.
