Abstract: For the testing of bottles (3, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d), in particular by mass spectrometry, gas samples are taken from a plurality of bottles (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d) simultaneously by means of probes (4, 5, 6, 7). The gas samples are transmitted successively in a predetermined sequence to a mass spectrometer (1) by means of a manifold device (16, 17, 18, 19). In this manner, one mass spectrometer is sufficient for testing a plurality of bottles, this reducing the expense, maintenance outlay and calibration outlay considerably.

Abstract: To detect contamination in used PET returnable bottles, they are fed to a first testing station which takes a gas sample from each bottle. This first testing station tests for the presence of heavy contamination. Heavily contaminated bottles are identified as dirty. The bottles are then fed to a second testing station which takes a gas sample from the clean bottles and tests it for contamination, with a lower detection threshold. Bottles detected here as contaminated are removed, as are the bottles which fail the first test. The two-stage process allows testing with greater sensitivity while maintaining a high bottle throughput.

The gas samples are fed in succession and in a predetermined sequence to a mass spectrometer by a distribution device. In this way, a single mass spectrometer suffices for the testing of several bottles at once, thus substantially reducing costs and maintenance and calibration time.

During this, the first test station (1) tests for the presence of heavy soiling. Such bottles are marked as being soiled. The bottles are fed to a second test station (2) which also removes a gas sample from the unmarked bottles and tests said gas sample with a lower detection threshold for contaminants. Bottles recognised as contaminated here, as well as the marked bottles, are separated out. The two-stage process permits measurement with high sensitivity but still with high bottle throughput.

Abstract: The bottle tester has a stationary and a movable distributor head (17), and conduits (20), leading from the movable part to extractor elements, which dip into the bottles. An adaptor part (24) may be used with the tester instead of the stationary distributor head. The adaptor has a connection (27) for supply of eg. a gas, and a semi-circular channel (25) in contact with the connection. When the adaptor is in place, the channel is in connection with some of the conduits via the movable distributor head. The adaptor presses the fluid through the tester, and leaky areas are indicated by fluid leakages.
