Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording material improved in the surface shape, having a good traveling property, particularly an improved output level, a low modulation noise and a less fluctuation in the output level during traveling of a tape. SOLUTION: This recording material consists of a nonmagnetic substrate and more than one different layer provided on this substrate and at least one layer among these different layers is a magnetic layer suitable for storing information. In this case, when the recording material 3 is mounted on a reference surface 2 while a surface 3' opposite to an information recording head imparts the tension of about 14-200 mN to the recording material 3, the recording material 3 has such a surface shape that 50% of the surface 3' is separated from the reference surface 2 by

Abstract: The magnetic recording material has a non-magnetic substrate. One or several further layers are applied to the substrate. At least one of these further layers is a magnetic layer suitable for storing information. The surface of the recording material nearest to the magnetic head used for recording information has a surface profile formed such that 50% of the surface has a distance of no more than 80 nm from a reference surface (2). 90% of the surface has a distance of no more than 140 nm from the reference surface (2). The recording material (3) lies on the reference surface (2) with its surface under a tension of around 140 to 200 mN. Preferably the density function of the frequency of discrete distance values exhibits a monomodal distribution.
