Abstract: PATCHES OF ADHESIVE ARE IMPREGNATED INTO BATTERY SEPARATOR MATERIAL, EACH PATCH BEING IN THE FORM OF A CLOSED LOOP INSIDE OF WHICH IS AN AREA OF SEPARATOR MATERIAL NOT IMPREGNATED WITH THE ADHESIVE. ELECTROLYTE IS THEN IMPREGNATED INTO THE AREA INSIDE EACH PATCH OF ADHESIVE, AFTER WHICH THE SEPARATOR SEGMENTS ARE ASSEMBLED INTO BATTERIES WHERE THE ADHESIVE PATCHES SERVE AS SEALS.
PREFERABLY THE ADHESIVE PATCHES ARE NONCONDUCTIVE AND ARE IMPREGNATED ALONG CONTINOUS STRIPS OF SEPARATOR MATERIAL, AND A FURTHER PREFERENCE IS TO ASSEMBLE THE SEPARATOR SEGMENTS INTO THE BATTERIES WHICH ARE STRUCURALLY CONNECTED TOGETHER BY THE CONTINUOUS STRIPS. AFTER ASSEMBLY OF THE BATTERIES THE CONTINUOUS STRIPS MAY BE CUT BETWEEN PATCHES OF ADHESIVE TO OBTAIN STRUCTURALLY UNCONNECTED BATTERIES.-

Abstract: 1,241,396. Electric batteries. ESB Inc. 13 April, 1970, No. 17455/70. Heading H1B. A sealed, substantially leak-proof electric battery comprises a thermoplastic outer can 21 with its open end sealed by a thermoplastic closure 35 which is spin welded to the can. One metal terminal 24 passes through the can into contact with one electrode and a second metal terminal 33 passes through closure 35 and is connected through a rotatable contact to the other electrode. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the rotatable contact is a contact plate 31 spot-welded to terminal 33 and in contact with the helical spring current collector 30 of the negative electrode 28. Terminal 24 is spotwelded to positive current collector 23 which is in contact with positive electrode 26. In another embodiment in which the negative electrode is a gel of relatively low viscosity, e.g gelled zinc, comprising zinc powder, KOH and carboxymethyl cellulose, the second terminal is spot-welded to a rod-like negative current collector which extends into the negative electrode and spins therein during the spin-welding operation. The positive electrode in this embodiment comprises a mix of MnO 2 , a binder and graphite, which is compacted into place within the positive current collector lining the can. The can and closure is preferably made of polypropylene. Other suitable materials are polyethylene, nylon, styrene polymers or vinyl polymers, e.g. P.V.C. Gases can be vented automatically through the polypropylene can. Separate vent holes may be provided in the closure. The battery construction is applicable to both alkaline and Leclanche type batteries which can be either primary or secondary.
