    Abstract: Process utilizing Ziegler-type catalyst system for polymerizing butadiene to high molecular weight polybutadienes possessing varying proportions of trans-1,4 units, in the range of 50-90 percent comprising: an organoaluminum compound, a Lewis base, and a Ti(halogen)3.nAlI3 composition. The polymers thus obtained exhibit outstanding properties as elastomers when cross-linked and as thermo-elastic polymers in the uncured state.

    Abstract: Ziegler-type polymers comprising C14-C24 alpha-monoolefins and having a number average molecular weight within the range between about 1,000 and about 200,000 are effective dewaxing aids for improving the efficiency of the separation of wax from hydrocarbon oils. Preferred dewaxing aids include mixtures of two or more homopolymers of C14-C24 alpha-monoolefins and copolymers of two or more alpha-monoolefins containing from 14 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule. The Ziegler-type polymers when combined with Friedel-Crafts condensation products of chlorinated wax and naphthalene synergistically improve the separation of wax from petroleum oils.

    Abstract: A crystalline titanium chloride (probably predominantly TiCl3) cocrystallized with AlCl3 is produced by heating at 80 DEG -200 DEG C. a slurry of one mole TiCl4 and 0,1-0,35 atom Al powder in an aromatic hydrocarbon or chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon. The product may be isolated, dry ball-milled and then activated with an organometallic compound, e.g. an alkyl Al compound prior to use as a catalyst for polymerizing a C3-20 a -olefin such as propylene. Other specified monomers are butene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, heptene-1, dodecene-1 and styrene. The polymerization reaction may be terminated with a C1-8 alcohol such as isopropyl or n-butyl alcohol, preferably in combination with a chelating agent such as acetylacetone or diacetyl, and the polymer filtered and washed with alcohol or an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid. Specified organometallic compounds are Et3Al, Pr3Al, i-Bu3Al and Et2AlCl.
