    Abstract: The disclosed systems and techniques enable dual mode operation for model-based controllers in which the controllers are capable of operating in both (i) a constrained solution mode, and (ii) an unconstrained solution mode. The dual mode operation improves control because it enables the use of constrained solution mode operation when possible (constrained solution mode often enables superior control) and enables the use of unconstrained solution mode when constrained solution mode is not possible (e.g., when it is impossible to develop the constrained solution with the time available). This enables superior control when compared to typical model predictive control (MPC) controllers.

    Abstract: A method includes receiving at a field device, from a first client device or application, a message indicating a selection of a first one of a plurality of publish categories corresponding to a type of information desired by the first client device or application. The method further includes transmitting, from the field device to the first client device or application, an identification of each of a plurality of publish lists corresponding to the first one of the selected publish category. The publish lists are stored on the field device and each includes a set of parameters associated with the field device. The method includes receiving at the field device, from the first client device or application, a selection of a publish list identified by the field device, and transmitting, from the field device to the first client device or application, the set of parameters associated with the selected publish list.

    Abstract: A gateway system securely delivers and exposes data generated by and/or related to a process plant for consumption by external systems, and includes an edge-facing component that receives process plant-related data from a process plant via a field-facing component of the system. The received data may comport with an exposable data type system utilizing a syntax known to the external systems. The edge-facing component stores the received data in a data lake, and mines the data lake to thereby discover relationships between stored data points. Indications of the received data and the discovered interrelationships are stored in a contextualized process plant knowledge repository, such as a graph database, that is accessible to the external systems and other systems and applications via one or more access mechanisms, which may include utilities, services, servers, and/or applications. Some of the access mechanisms allow external applications to be installed at the edge-facing component.

    Abstract: Multi-purpose dynamic simulation and run-time industrial or process control (MPDSC) system or platform 10 of an industrial process plant. The MPDSC comprises a process control system including one or more control loops operating to control an industrial process during run-time operations of the industrial process plant. Each control loop of the one or more control loops includes a respective field device disposed in physical environment 15 of the industrial process plant and a respective process control device disposed in virtual environment 12 of the industrial process plant. Each control loop utilizes input/output (I/O) switch 25 to deliver respective abstracted I/O data within each control loop. Each of the I/O switch and the respective process control device includes respective publish/subscribe layer 35, 42, 32 via which the respective abstracted I/O data is delivered within each process control loop.

    Abstract: A software-defined process control system (SDCS) includes a method executed by a discovery service for inferring information regarding a discovered physical or logical asset of a process plant. The method includes obtaining an announcement indicative of presence of a physical or logical asset of the process plant and obtaining, from a context dictionary, one or more parameters retrievable from the physical or logical asset, or one or more services associated with the physical or logical asset, that were not indicated in the announcement. Furthermore, the method includes storing a record of the discovered physical or logical asset in a discovered item data store. The record includes an indication of the identity of the physical or logical asset and the one or more parameters or one or more services associated with the physical or logical asset that were not indicated in the announcement. Also claimed is the context dictionary service executing via a container in the SDCS which stores type information of assets and sets of capabilities including parameters retrievable from or associated services for that asset type. The dictionary is used to respond to requests for capability based on asset ID look-up and responding based on the asset type.

    Abstract: An industrial control system having a plurality of field devices and a plurality of controllers for controlling the field devices. An open protocol communication network 16 connects distributed I/O nodes of the field devices to each controller node, such that field device signals and control signals can be sent and received. A supervisor / hypervisor 50 manages the controllers by performing load-balancing such that tasks may be allocated / distributed between controller nodes that are not physically coupled to the field devices. The controllers may be virtual controllers 52 which are moveable between processors. Control logic may be moved from one hardware location to another without disruption in communications, and without needing to reconfigure the control system to implement changes. Field device signals may be transmitted on the communication network 16 using a hardware location independent communication addressing scheme that facilitates the transmission of data messages to addresses to devices on the network without specifying a hardware location / address or network location / address of the devices.

    Abstract: A process control system for operating a process plant, comprising a plurality of field devices 20 disposed within the process control network 100; and a controller 11 communicatively connected to the plurality of field devices and having at least one control module 34 for operating the process plant. The controller includes computer-readable instructions that cause the controller to associate a generic shadow block 36 within the controller with the control module, wherein the generic shadow block is instantiated prior to receiving description data 13 and configured to mimic the operation of the function block of the field device based upon the received description data.     Abstract: To secure communications from a process plant across a unidirectional data diode to a remote system, a sending device at the plant end publishes data across the diode to a receiving device at the remote end. The publication of various data is respectively in accordance with context information (e.g., identification of data sources, respective expected rate of data generation/arrival, etc.) that is descriptive of data sources of the plant and that is recurrently provided by the sending device across the diode. A recurrence interval may be based on a tolerance for lost data or another characteristic of an application, service, or consumer of data at the remote system. The publishing may leverage an industrial communication protocol (e.g., HART-IP) and/or a suitable general-purpose communication protocol (e.g., JSON).
