Abstract: A pin which projects downwards from an upper core plate (3) of a water-cooled nuclear reactor and is designed to locate the upper end (30) of a fuel assembly is replaced, if damaged, with the plate (3) removed from the reactor and submerged in a cooling pond, using remote-controlled equipment to cut out the old pin, widen the lower part of through hole (10) and insert a new pin (26). The new pin comprises a downwardly projecting part (28), to locate the fuel assembly, and an upper part including a wide portion (34), locating in the widened part of hole (10), and a threaded shaft extending through the plate to engage a retaining nut (29).
