Abstract: PCT No. PCT/FR96/00137 Sec. 371 Date Jul. 29, 1997 Sec. 102(e) Date Jul. 29, 1997 PCT Filed Jan. 26, 1996 PCT Pub. No. WO96/24140 PCT Pub. Date Aug. 8, 1996A tube of zirconium-based alloy for constituting all or a portion of a cladding or guide tube for a nuclear fuel assembly. The tube is made of an alloy containing, by weight, 1.0-1.7% of tin, 0.55-0.80% of iron, 0.20-0.60% total of chromium and/or vanadium, and 0.10-0.18% of oxygen, with 50-200 ppm of carbon and 50-120 ppm of silicon. The alloy further contains only zirconium and unavoidable impurities, and it is completely recrystallized.

Abstract: A process for mfg. a tube, for forming all or the external part of a nuclear fuel rod cladding or a guide tube for a nuclear fuel assembly, involves (a) producing a rod of Zr alloy contg. 50-250 ppm. Fe, 0.8-1.3 wt.% Nb, less than 1600 ppm. O, less than 200 ppm. C and less than 120 ppm. Si; (b) water quenching the rod from 1000-1200 degrees C; (c) heating to 600-800 degrees C and extruding a tube blank; (d) cold rolling to tube in at least four passes with intermediate anneals at 560-620 degrees C; and (e) subjecting to final heat treatment at 560-620 degrees C. All the heat treatments are carried out in vacuum or inert atmos. Also claimed is a cladding or guide tube for a fuel assembly of a PWR, the tube consisting of the Zr alloy described above in the fully recrystallised condition.

Abstract: A zirconium alloy tube for forming the whole or the outer portion of a nuclear fuel pencil housing or a nuclear fuel assembly guide tube. The zirconium alloy contains 0.8-1.8 wt. % of niobium, 0.2-0.6 wt. % of tin and 0.02-0.4 wt. % of iron, and has a carbon content of 30-180 ppm, a silicon content of 10-120 ppm and an oxygen content of 600-1800 ppm. The tube may be used when recrystallized or stress relieved.

Abstract: A tube, for use in a fuel canister or to guide a control rod in a nuclear reactor, is made of an alloy comprising mainly Zr plus 0.4-0.6 wt.% Sn, 0.5-0.8% Fe, 0.35-0.75% V, 0.10-0.18% O, 100-180 ppm C and 50-120 ppm Si, the alloy being completely recrystallised. Also claimed is a process for mfg. the above tube in which a cast ingot of the above alloy is forged into a bar, then heated to the beta phase and quenched in water, annealed in the alpha phase at 640-760, pref. 730 degrees C, drawn and pierced to tubular form, annealed again at 640-760, pref. 700 degrees C, and then subjected to successive cold rollings to reduce the tube wall thickness with heating to 640-760 degrees C under vacuum or inert atmosphere between rollings. Finally the tube is annealed at 560-650 degrees C. The parameter A representing the sum of heat treatments is between 10 and 10 .
