Abstract: The procedure for cleaning the steam generator of a nuclear reactor with pressurised water cooling consists of applying a non-corrosive cleaning solution to the surfaces of the secondary part of the generator after every six years of cumulative operation, and the tube plate after every two years of operation, using a fluid which dissolves and removes deposits containing iron oxide, especially magnetite, particles. The cleaning solution contains a chelating agent such as ethylene tetraacetic acid, hydrazine and a corrosion inhibitor, and is kept at a temperature of close to 140 deg C during the iron oxide removal phase and 90 deg C during passivation and rinsing phases. The procedure can also include a phase for removing copper oxide. Removes deposits before they become harmful to operation of reactor.

Abstract: Treating aqueous acid effluents which contain an organic feed stock, an organic reducing agent and nitrate ions and which result from the decontamination of nuclear power station components comprises: (i) adding to the effluent at least one oxidising agent (ozone and/or hydrogen peroxide); and (ii) exposing the effluent to UV radiation. This neutralises the effluent by converting the organic feed stock into water and carbon dioxide, plus perhaps oxides of elements present in the feed stock. Also claimed are: (i) a process of treating different types of effluent (products of oxidising, reducing and rinsing stages) resulting from the decontamination of nuclear power station components comprising treating each effluent separately according to above before removal and, possibly, demineralisation; (ii) treating effluents resulting from the oxidising and reducing stages of the decontamination of nuclear power station components by mixing the two effluents and then treating the mixture according to the above process before removal and, possibly, demineralisation; and (iii) a device for the application of any of the above processes comprising a circulation loop for the liquid effluent with: (1) a storage container (possibly including a device for mixing the effluent); (2) a device to make the effluent circulate around the loop; (3) a device for injecting a liquid or gaseous reactive (H2O2/O3) into the loop; and (4) a source of UV radiation.

Abstract: The cleaning procedure consists of injecting a chemical solution into the secondary section of the steam generator (1) through one of the following circuits: the normal feed circuit (8), the emergency feed circuit (10), or the purging circuit, using a reagent injection pump (21) set in a branch of the injection circuit. The chemical solution is a complexing agent containing ethylenediamine- tetraacetic acid, a reducer such as hydrazine and a corrosion inhibitor. It is kept at a predetermined temperature by circulating it with the aid of cooling water at the appropriate temperature in the primary circuit, and it is evacuated through the purging circuit once the pollutants have been dissolved. The circuit is then rinsed with demineralised water from a tank in the emergency feed circuit.
