Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restore the foul release effectiveness of a damaged foul release coating area on a metallic substrate by applying an adhesion promoter composition in the form of a specified two-part condensation curing silicone on the damaged foul release coating area on the metallic substrate of the shell of a ship and others. SOLUTION: Organisms such as barnacles, shellfishes, and algae are inclined to adhere to a metal structure immersed in seawater such as a ship bottom, and an antifouling coating is applied on a metallic substrate such as the ship bottom to prevent the adhesion. In restoring the foul release effectiveness of a damaged foul release coating area on the metallic substrate, the coating area is treated with an adhesion promoter composition in the form of a two-part condensation curing silicone RTV (room temperature curing) comprising a silanol-terminated polydiorganosiloxane and 0.5-5.5 wt.% of an aminoalkyltrialkoxysilane. After that, the composition is applied as a top coat.

Abstract: A method is provided for applying a two-part RTV silicone tie coat directly onto damaged foul release coating area on a metallic substrate to enable restoration procedures. The direct application onto aged epoxy or silicone surface of an effective amount of an aminoalkyltrialkoxysilane, such as gamma -aminopropyltrimethoxy-silane, in a two-part RTV silicone tie coat, has been found to provide cohesive failure results with directly applied two-part RTV silicone top coat. A treated metallic substrate is obtained thereby.

Abstract: A coated article for foul release for use in aquatic applications does not require a discrete tie-layer to ensure adhesion of a coating to a substrate. An adhesion promoting layer comprising an anticorrosive material and a bonding agent is applied directly to the substrate. A release layer comprising organopolysiloxane is deposited onto the adhesion promoting layer. A method for applying the foul release coating comprises the following steps: applying an adhesion promoting layer, curing the adhesion promoting layer, applying the release layer and curing the release layer.
