Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover bis-phenol A from compositions containing reaction residue of a dihydric phenol, particularly bis-phenol A units. SOLUTION: A bis-phenol A-containing polymer is roughly crushed and the crushed granules are treated with an organic swelling solvent which is compatible to water such as an alcohol or other solvent and can be readily distilled off from the aqueous solution for a time enough to swell the crushed granules. Then, the swollen crushed granules are brought into contact with an aqueous ammonia which can selectively cleave the ester bonds of the bis-phenol A residual units at a temperature of >=25 deg.C to form the liquid phase and the solid phase. The liquid phase is separated from the solid phase, ammonia and the organic swelling solvent are distilled out of the liquid phase to obtain an aqueous solution containing dissolved urea, partially precipitated bis-phenol A. A sufficient amount of water is added to the solution to precipitate bis-phenol A to form the liquid phase the solid phase. Finally, the bis phenol A of the solid phase is recovered and dried.

Abstract: A method of recovering a dihydric phenol from a composition containing a thermoplastic polymer having the reaction residue of dihydric phenol units in the polymer structure, comprises: (a) granulating a composition containing a thermoplastic polymer having the reaction residue of dihydric phenol units in the polymer structure; (b) treating the granulated particles of the thermoplastic composition with an organic swelling solvent that is miscible with water and is easily distilled off from an aqueous solution and for a time sufficient to swell the particles; (c) contacting the swelled granulated particles with an aqueous ammoniacal solution of sufficient molar strength to severe selectively the ester bonds of the reaction residue of the dihydric phenol units in the thermoplastic polymer and at least 25[deg]C, forming a solid phase and a liquid phase; (d) separating the liquid phase from the solid phase; (e) distilling the ammonia and the organic swelling solvent from the liquid phase; (f) adding sufficient water to the residue which contains dissolved urea and partially precipitated dihydric phenol forming a liquid and a solid phase of dihydric phenol; and (g) separating the insoluble; solid dihydric phenol portion from the liq. phase. Also claimed is the polycarbonate prepared from bisphenol-A obtained by a preferred method.

By using a process for the redistribution of polyphenylene ethers by reacting the polyphenylene ether in solution with a phenolic compound, wherein the polyphenylene ether is reacted with a phenolic compound with formula 3 wherein the phenolic rings are disubstituted with methyl groups or ethyl groups in the ortho positions and the group X is separated from the phenolic ring through at least two carbon atoms and the phenolic compound has a molecular weight of not more than 400 g/mol, preferably not more than 300 g/mol and the redistribution is performed in a mixture of toluene and methanol with 1-30 volume % of methanol or in toluene in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst such as tri (C8-C1O alkyl) methyl ammonium chloride as a promoter; and a diphenoquinone, preferably of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diphenoquinone is used as a catalyst and the molar concentration of the phenolic compound is chosen between 0.9 to 1.1 times the molar quantity of monomeric units in the polyphenylene ether in the reaction solution, more than 90% of the phenolic compound can be incorporated in the polyphenylene.
