Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover Pt from a Pt-containing film coated on gas turbine engine parts (10). SOLUTION: The part (10) is brought into contact with a chemical releasing agent and the component in the coated film is dissolved and removed to produce the Pt-containing films (12, 14) of oxide product with acid on the surface (16) of the parts (10). Such films (12, 14) are removed from the parts (10) to obtain an enriched Pt-remaining material containing at least about 10% Pt. Such enriched Pt containing material is collected and refined and thus, Pt is recovered from the above material.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for electrochemically releasing >=1 metallic film from a substrate. SOLUTION: Since the method of this invention has electrochemical selectivity, an influence of the electrochemical releasing method on a mother alloy is minimized. This method consists of a stage for preparing an electrolyte, a stage for arranging a coated article and >=1 electrode in the electrolyte, a stage for applying a current between the electrode and coated article and a stage for removing >=1 film from the coated article without changing the mother alloy in quality. The system for performing the electrochemical releasing method is composed of an electrode, a DC power source and plural electrodes for applying a DC current to the article to be treated. The DC power source can be connected to the coated article and plural electrodes. One or more films are removed from the mother alloy by this system.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily, rapidly and safely execute removal at a low energy cost by bringing >=1 kind of stripping compositions containing aliphatic or aromatic sulfonic acids, second acids and >=1 kind among complexing agents, oxidizing agents and reducing agents into contact with the surfaces of substrates, then removing the coatings. SOLUTION: The stripping compositions of different kinds are used according to the kinds of the substrates, the kinds of the coatings to be removed from the substrates, the final applications of the substrates, the presence or absence of additional treatments, and the like. The sulfonic acid adequate as the composition of the first kind includes metal sulfonic acid, benzene sulfonic acid, and the like. The composition of the second kind includes an inorganic acid and an organic solvent. Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, perchloric acid, and the like, are used for the inorganic acid, and an aliphatic alcohol, and the like are used for the organic solvent. The weight ratio of the inorganic acid to the solvent is specified to about 20:80 to about 80:20. The composition of a third kind consists of sulfuric acid or its aqueous solution and the ratio of the acid to the water is specified to about 10:90 to about 65:35.

Abstract: A METHOD FOR PARTIALLY STRIPPING A COATING FROM THE SURFACE OF A SUBSTRATE, AND RELATED ARTICLES AND COMPOSITIONS An electrochemical process for selectively stripping at least one coating from the surface of a substrate is disclosed. The substrate (6) (often a turbine engine component) is immersed in a composition (3) through which an electrical current flows. The composition (3) includes a halide salt, such as sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, and potassium chloride. In preferred embodiments, the electrical current is direct current (dc). The process is especially useful for selectively removing portions of diffusion aluminide coatings. For example, the additive layer (74) can efficiently be removed, without substantially affecting the underlying diffusion layer (72) or substrate (70). Related stripping compositions and apparatuses are also described.

Abstract: A method for removing an aluminide coating from a substrate includes the steps of contacting the surface of the substrate with at least one stripping composition to degrade the coating. The stripping composition includes an aliphatic or aromatic sulfonic acid, and at least one additive. The coating is then removed.

Abstract: A method for recovering Pt from Pt-bearing coating on a gas turbine engine component (10). The component (10) is contacted with a chemical stripping agent to dissolve away constituents of the coating and produce a Pt-bearing film (12,14) of acid oxidation products at the surface (16) of the component (10). The film (12,14) is removed from the component (10) to produce a Pt-rich residue containing at least about 10% Pt. The Pt-rich residue is collected.

Abstract: An electrochemical stripping process is described that strips at least one metallic coating from a substrate. Due to the electrochemical selectivity of the disclosed process, the parent alloy is minimally affected by the electrochemical stripping process. The process comprises providing an electrolyte (3); disposing the coated articles (6) and at least one electrode (4, 5) in the electrolyte; applying a current between the electrode and the coated articles, and removing the at least one coating from the coated articles without modifying the parent alloy. The system for the electrochemical stripping process comprises an electrolyte (3); a direct current source (10); and plurality of electrodes (4, 5) from which a direct current may be directed to the article being stripped. The direct current source is capable of being connected to the coated articles and the plurality of electrodes. The system permits removal of the at least one coating from the parent alloy.
