Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for controlling recording of a micro-hologram to a plurality of data tracks of a holographic disk, using a plurality of reverse propagation light beams.SOLUTION: When a holographic disk is incomplete, or the disk is moved during a recording process, a signal beam is sometimes deviated from a target data track. According to an embodiment, a tracking beam is guided to a reference layer of the disk. Deviation of a reference beam from a target groove of the reference layer sometimes shows a tacking error. A detector detects reflection of the tracking beam, and an error signal can be generated in response to the detected tracking error. The tracking error can be compensated when a servo mechanical element activates (for example, performs parallel displacement, rotation and/or inclination in a radial, tangential or axial direction) one or more optical elements which emit reverse propagation light beams.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for recording micro-holograms in a holographic disk. Disk tilting or disk imperfections may cause counter-propagating recording and reference beams to deviate from the target data position in the disk. In some embodiments, a tracking beam is directed to a tracking position in the disk, and deviation of the tracking beam from the tracking position may indicate tracking and/or focusing errors of the recording and/or reference beams. A detector may generate an error signal in response to such errors. A first servo-mechanical system may actuate a first optical head (e.g., transmitting the reference and tracking beams) to compensate for such errors, and a second servo-mechanical system may actuate a second optical head (e.g., transmitting the recording beam) to follow the actuation of the first servo system, such that an interference of the reference beam and the recording beam may be maintained in the target data position.

Abstract: Provided are methods and systems of encoding and decoding techniques in an optical storage system having a multi-head detector. In one embodiment, source data may be encoded using error correction coding (e.g., turbo coding) techniques, and the encoded data may be interleaved and distributed to more than one detector head of the multi-head detector. Data recorded in an optical disc may be retrieved by the multi-head detector, and a read data from more than one detector head may be concurrently decoded to retrieve estimates of the original information in the source data. Further, more than one encoder/decoder may be used, and each encoder/decoder may encode or decode data from multiple data heads. Some embodiments also include replicating multiple discs.

Abstract: A multi-stage actuator 26 actuates one or more optical components 14 of an optical head for a holographic disc 12. The multi-stage actuator includes a coarse or cross-layer displacement component 25 which actuates an optical component to change the beam focus in a displacement range corresponding to the total thickness of the plurality of data layers in a holographic disk 12, such that a beam 16 is impinged on the target data layer. The multi-stage actuator also includes a fine or intra-layer focusing component 27 which actuates the optical component 14 in a smaller range to focus the beam on the target data position. The cross-layer displacement component 25 and the intra-layer focusing component 27 may each include more than one actuator. The focusing component 27 can also actuate the optical component in a tilting motion to compensate for movement or imperfections of the disk during a reading or recording process.

Abstract: A method for servoing when reading out a recorded holographic disc or recording in a preformatted holographic disc, includes detecting a primary signal 86 of a reflected primary beam from a target data track of a target data layer. The primary beam of radiation having a first wavelength. Power measurement 94 of the primary signal is compared 96 with a threshold value of power. A tracking signal 90 of a reflected tracking beam from a reference layer of the holographic disc is detected in an event that the power measurement of the primary signal is below the threshold value of power. The tracking beam of radiation has a second wavelength. A servo error signal 100, 102 is generated based upon the primary signal or the tracking signal and an optical sub-system 108 is actuated based upon either of the primary servo error signal or the tracking servo error signal such that the primary beam focuses on the target data layer. Alternatively the optical sub-system may actuated based on the primary servo error signal and a tracking run-out profile.

Abstract: The present techniques provide methods and systems for controlling the recording of micro-holograms using multiple counter-propagating light beams over multiple data tracks of a holographic disk. Imperfections in a holographic disk or movement of the disk during a recording process may cause signal beams to deviate from target data tracks. In some embodiments, a tracking beam is directed to a reference layer in the disk. Deviation of the reference beam from a target groove in the reference layer may be indicative of tracking errors. A detector may detect reflections of the tracking beam and generate an error signal in response to detected tracking errors. Servo-mechanical devices may actuate (e.g., radially, tangentially, or axially translate, rotate, and/or tilt) one or more optical components through which the counter-propagating light beams are emitted to compensate for tracking errors.
