    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder deactivation engine having a switching valve actuator for deactivating a selected cylinder of an engine. SOLUTION: The engine has the switching valve actuator with a positive valve lash for operating the valve of a deactivation cylinder and a conventional valve actuator with negligible valve lash for actuating the valve of a conventional cylinder. A cam for the deactivation cylinder has greater opening and closing ramps than a cam of the conventional cylinder. On this account, the quality of combustion is impaired during idling and low loading to give an operator a feel of engine vibration. To compensate for this, the timing of the exhaust cam of the deactivation cylinder is advanced relative to the timing of the conventional cylinder to reduce the valve overlap of the deactivation cylinder to sufficiently near the valve overlap of the conventional cylinder to provide stabile combustion in both the conventional cylinder and the deactivation cylinder during idling and permit the operation of all cylinders with almost the same output.
