Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve flow of a suction port. SOLUTION: This valve train layout for an overhead valve engine 10 uses a single cam shaft 22 actuating two suction valves 40 and a single exhaust valve 62. The two suction valves 50 are aligned in the internal side part of a cylinder provided with the exhaust valve 62 in its external side part. The suction valves 40 are actuated by a cam follower 28 and a single push rod 30 driving a rocker arm 32 with dual arms 36 and separate play adjusters 38 actuating the suction valves 40. A slave rocker arm 54 actuated by a cam follower 50 through a push rod 52 drives a secondary push rod 56, and the push rod pivotally moves a exhaust rocker arm 58 to actuate the discharge valve 62. The slave rocker arm 54 is pivotally moved on a common axis 34 with the suction rocker arm 32 or on an slant pivotal moving shaft. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine that has a plurality of cylinders and that generates exhaust gas. A catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions from the exhaust gas after achieving a light off temperature. A controller is connected to the engine and the catalytic converter. The controller deactivates the cylinder(s) of the engine before the catalytic converter achieves the light off temperature if the engine is operating at idle or low load. The controller waits a first period before deactivating the cylinder(s). The controller optimizes engine operating parameters to reduce a second period that is required to achieve the light off temperature. A temperature sensor is connected to the controller and senses ambient temperature. The controller does not deactivate the cylinders if the ambient temperature is below a first predetermined temperature. The controller activates all of the cylinders if the engine is operating at high load.

Abstract: Deactivation apparatus for selected cylinders of an engine include switching hydraulic lash adjusters or valve lifters forming part of a valve train for actuating engine valves of the selected cylinders and operable to actuate or release their respective valves in response to an oil pressure signal. A gallery carrying the lash adjusters includes oil passages fed by an engine pressure oil supply through a control valve to supply oil to switching portions of the lash adjusters. The control valve is operative to close or open communication of the oil supply with the lash adjusters and to relieve oil pressure in the passages when communication with the pressure oil supply is closed. Various bypass alternatives between the pressure oil supply and the oil passages carry oil to portions of the oil passages to purge air from the passages when the three-way valve exhaust port is open.

Abstract: A valve train layout for an overhead valve engine uses a single camshaft actuating two inlet valves and a single exhaust valve. The two inlet valves are preferably aligned on an inner side of a cylinder with the exhaust valve on an outer side. The inlet valves are preferably actuated by a cam follower and single push rod driving a rocker arm with dual arms and separate lash adjusters actuating the inlet valves. The exhaust valve is preferably actuated by a cam follower with a lash adjuster driving a single push rod operating a primary rocker arm that drives a secondary push rod pivoting an exhaust rocker arm to actuate the exhaust valve. In one embodiment, the primary rocker arm for the exhaust valve pivots on a common axis with the intake rocker arm. In an alternative embodiment, the primary rocker arm pivots on a canted pivot axis.
