Abstract: 594. GhÚrassimoff, N. Jan. 10. Signals, ship.-Relates to apparatus for indicating on board ship the proximity of land, other vessels, icebergs, and the like. The vessel is preceded by three small, submerged, electricallypropelled pilots 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1. They are arranged on the circumference of a circle the diameter and distance of which from the vessel depend on her speed and manoeuvring power. Power is supplied to them through cables, through which also signals can be conveyed to the vessel. The middle one 2, Fig. 3, is mounted on vertical trunnions in a frame b to which the cable Z is attached. It is provided with a large rudder G to steady it. It can, however, be locked to the frame to turn with it. The side pilots or feelers are directed outwards and maintained in position by rudders and by the lines c, c connecting them to the central one. The whole system can be manoeuvred by reducing the current to one or other of these side pilots. Should a vessel strike one of the connecting-lines, the side pilot affected rings a bell on board the ship so that her course can be altered to prevent a collision. A buoy u is attached to each pilot by a pole K, Fig. 3, the poles being connected by lines M. Floating obstructions are thus detected. Shoals are discovered by hanging levers connected by lines M which, when deflected, complete an alarm circuit. Should the central pilot strike an obstruction, a buffer i completes the alarm circuit. The side pilots have coloured lights to give information to an approaching vessel.

Abstract: 27,923. Gherassimoff, N. June 25, [Convention date]. Gyroscopic apparatus.-A device for securing the stability of rockets in the air comprises two rapidly rotating wheels j, k keyed on the shaft g, the wheel j being a turbine wheel driven by the escaping gases and the wheel k a propulsion wheel.
