    Abstract: A light source wherein a spiral line pulse generator, having an output coupled to one electrode of a metal halide discharge lamp and an input for coupling to a source of lamp operating power, provides high voltage, short duration lamp starting pulses. The spiral line pulse generator includes two conductors and two insulators, each in the form of an elongated sheet, in an alternating arrangement which is rolled together in a spiral configuration having a plurality of turns. The high voltage, short duration pulse is provided upon closure of a low inductance switch coupled between the conductors. A thermal switch can be utilized to bypass the spiral line pulse generator after lamp starting. The spiral line pulse generator can be enclosed within the lamp base of the light source.

    Abstract: D-22,650 A light source, including a high pressure discharge lamp and a starting pulse generator, such as a spiral line pulse generator, utilizes a generally straight elongated conductor, or starting aid, in close proximity to an outer surface of the discharge tube to provide efficient coupling of the starting pulse to the discharge lamp. The starting aid extends between a region proximate one of the electrodes and a region proximate the other of the electrodes. The starting aid provides within the discharge lamp an ionization path of minimum length free of circumferential turns when the conductor is energized by the pulse generator. The starting aid can be affixed to the discharge tube or can be mounted in one or more support brackets.

    Abstract: An electrodeless fluorescent light source (10) including an electrodeless lamp (11) containing a metal iodide or iodine (12). A fluorescing material (20) is disposed between the electrodeless lamp (11) and an outer envelope (17). When the contents (12) of the electrodeless lamp (11) are excited by high frequency power, excited iodine atoms emit ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet radiation impinges on the fluorescing material (20) causing it to emit visible light. The fluorescing material (20) may be a solid phosphor material on the outer surface of the electrodeless lamp, a solid phosphor material on the inner surface of the outer envelope, a gaseous phosphor material (20) in the space between the electrodeless lamp (11) and the outer envelope (17), or some combination thereof.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for general illumination wherein high frequency power is capacitively coupled to a low pressure discharge. A discharge lamp (30) includes an envelope (36) which is typically pear-shaped with a re-entrant cavity (38). The lamp envelope (36) encloses a fill material which forms during discharge a plasma which emits ultraviolet radiation and has an effective electrical impedance. The lamp envelope (36) typically includes on its inner surface a phosphor coating (42). An outer conductor (32), typically a conductive mesh, is disposed around the outer surface of the lamp envelope (36). A solid or hollow inner conductor (34) is disposed in the re-entrant cavity (38). The apparatus is configured so that the capacitive impedance associated with coupling of high frequency power from the conductors to the discharge is much less than the plasma impedance.

    Abstract: METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR STARTING HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMPS A high pressure sodium lamp, which includes a discharge tube enclosing xenon at pressures in excess of 300 torr, is reliably started by the combination of an igniter, a conductor wrapped around the discharge tube, and a switching circuit. The igniter provides periodic pulses of 2500 to 4000 volts with a duration of at least one microsecond. The switching circuit provides a high voltage pulse having an amplitude about equal to the amplitude of the periodic pulses and a duration much greater than the duration of the periodic pulses.     Abstract: An electrodeless lamp may be formed with a capsule having a radiant energy transmissive material defining an approximately cylindrical enclosed volume having an external length less than 20.0 millimeters, and an outer diameter less than 8.0 millimeters. The enclosed volume is filled with a lamp fill excitable by a high frequency electromagnetic field to produce radiant energy. The small size capsule produces a particularly efficient, orientation tolerant arc discharge. The arc is then highly stable as to position, yielding a good optical source to design for. The temperature gradient is small, thereby yielding little thermal strew on the capsule. An electrodeless HID headlamp system may be formed with the efficient capsule from a radio frequency source operating from a the power supply of a typical automobile. The headlamp system includes a high frequency power source, a transmission line, a coupler, an excitable lamp fill captured in a lamp capsule, a reflector and a lens.
