Abstract: PURPOSE:To automatically, very accurately, and easily measure the extending dimension of a crack. CONSTITUTION:A video camera 34 takes pictures of a crack produced in a test piece 10 and a picture processor 48 fetches and binarizes the pictures at prescribed time intervals, and then, a picture measuring instrument 52 measures the position of the front end of the crack by detecting the front end on the pictures. When the front end of the crack extends beyond a prescribed point in the pictures, a stage device 32 moves the camera 34 by a prescribed amount against a test piece supporting device 12. A computer 50 calculates the extending dimension of the crack as the sum of the total of displacement values of the front end measured in each cycle after the device 32 is actuated last time and the total of relatively moved amounts of the camera 34.

CONSTITUTION:A video camera 34 takes pictures of a crack generated in a test piece 10 and a picture processor 48 fetches the pictures gn of the crack at prescribed time intervals, forms differential pictures from the fetched pictures gn-gn-1, binarizes the differential pictures, and then, a picture measuring instrument 52 measures the position of the front end of the crack by detecting the front end on the differential pictures. A computer 50 calculates at least the extending dimension of the crack as the sum of the displaced amounts of the front end measured in each cycle.
