Abstract: 7092. Heinrich, W. March 24. Filaments of refractory metals or alloys are made from powdered metals by means of a binder prepared by heating 60 parts by weight of amorphous phosphorus with 50 parts of sulphur until combination takes place. The binder is a metalliclooking viscous liquid, boiling at above 400‹ C. Powdered tungsten, for instance, may be wellmixed with one fifth of its weight of this binder and pressed into filaments. These are heated in a vacuum, first to 400-500‹ C., when most of the binder is removed and the metallic particles are firmly united, owing to the formation of phosphides and sulphides, and subsequently to above 1000‹ C., when the filaments sinter and the remaining phosphorus and sulphur are expelled. If a smaller proportion of phosphorus is used in making the binder, the product is hard, and if a larger, it is at first more liquid but on a further addition of phosphorus becomes bard.

Buoys. - A collapsible buoy, shown in vertical section in Fig. 1, comprises a canvas receptacle a strengthened by rings b, which are connected together by telescoping rods c. At the base of the buoy is a tank d having perforations e to admit sea-water, which acts as ballast. In the centre of the tank is a drinking-water receptacle f, into which dips a tube g terminating at its upper end in a tap h provided with a nipple by which the water can be drawn up. At the upper end of the buoy is a hinged hood i, which can be closed from within by thumb-screws p and has a window k. Air is supplied to the interior of the buoy by a pipe l having its upper end protected by a perforated cap m. Sleeves r hang down outside the buoy, and a bag q contains provisions &c.
