Abstract: Use of telomers formed from telogens containing mercaptan groups and acrylic compounds as scale and/or corrosion inhibitors. Telomers of the general formula or where R is an aliphatic radical of 2 to 22 carbon atoms which may contain one or more carboxyl and/or hydroxyl groups, X is H or methyl, M is an alkali metal ion, and n and m are integers of a magnitude such that the telomers have an average molecular weight between 300 and 3000, in particular 700 to 2000, and where some of the nitrile groups can also be hydrolysed to amide groups, as scale and/or corrosion inhibitors in industrial process water systems instead of phosphorus- containing substances in an amount of 0.1 to 100, in particular from 1 to 30, ppm, based on the process water.

Abstract: An antimicrobial compsn. comprises (1) 40-70 wt. % of the reaction prod. of Epsilon-caprolactam (I) with N-alkylalkane diamines of formula R1R2N-(CH2)n-NH2 (II) (where R1 is 10-18 C aliphatic gp.; R2 is H or 1-4C aliphatic gp.; and n is 2-6) in a (I):(II) molar ratio of 1-10:1 and (2) 30-60wt. % of an oxazolidine deriv. of formula (III) (where R is 10-14C aliphatic gp.; m is 2 or 3, and n is 0 or 1). The compsn. is used to preserve and/or sterilise industrial water (i.e. cooling water, air-conditioning water, etc). The compsn. is usable under adverse conditions in small quantities and does not lead to the formation of resistant species.

Abstract: Dewatering of domestic sewage sludge by addn. of treating (esp. flocculating) agents followed by mechanical or dynamic dewatering is improved by cooling the sludge to >0 degree C (pref. -3 to -50 degrees C, esp. -5 to -20 degrees C) and then warming to >0 degree C before adding the treating agent. The freeze-thaw treatment greatly increases the solid content of the dewatered sludge. Prefd. flocculating agents are acylamide homo- and copolymers, esp. those contg. tert. amino or quat. ammonium gps. The flocculating agents are pref. added in an amt. of 50-200 g/m3. Primary sludge with a solids content of 6.2% was treated with 200 ppm of a polyacrylamide flocculant modified with 50% 2-methacryloylethyl-trimethylammonium chloride and then suction-filtered for 5 min. The prod. had a solids content of 26.6%. The same sludge was cooled to -5 degrees C, warmed to room temp. after 5 min., treated with 80 ppm of the same flocculant, and filtered. The prod. had a solids content of 38.4%.
