Abstract: Copolymers comprise 97.9-88% by weight of trioxane, 2 to 10% by weight of a cyclice ether, and 0.1 to 2% by weight of an alkyl-glycidyl-formal. They are prepared using a cationic catalyst and a temperature range of -50 DEG C. to + 100 DEG C. Specified cyclic ethers are ethylene and propylene oxides, epichlorhydrin, glycol- and diglycol-formal, and 4-chloromethyl dioxolane. Suitable catalysts are inorganic and organic acids, acid halides, and Lewis Acids e.g. BF3 etherates, and diazonium fluoroborates. The polymerization may be in bulk, in solution, or in suspension. The catalysts may be inactivated after polymerisation using e.g. ammonia or a methanolic solution of an aromatic amine. The copolymers may be stabilized against heat by using e.g. polyamides, amides of polybasic carboxylic acids, amidines, and ureas, against oxidation by using e.g. phenols and aromatic amines, and against light by using e.g. a -hydroxybenzophenone derivatives. The copolymers may be formed into foils, films, or fibres, and may also be ground and comminuted.

Thermoplastic moulding compositions consist of a nucleating agent having a particle size of below 2 microns and a polyester containing the residues of (a) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and optionally a small amount of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, (b) a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol, and (c) an alcohol having more than two primary hydroxy groups in an amount in the range 0.01% to 2% by weight, calculated as the free alcohol with reference to the weight of polyester. The preferred polyester is modified polyethylene terephthalate or poly-( 1 ,4-cyclohexyl-dimethylene)- terephthalate. Specified are polyols: 1,1,1- tris - hydroxymethyl ethane, 1,1,1 - tris - hydroxymethyl propane, pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, 1,1,1,6,6,6 - hexakis - hydroxymethyl - hexane, 1,1,3,3 - tetrakis - hydroxymethyl - cyclopentane and 1,2,4 - tris - hydroxymethyl benzene; nucleating agents: kaolin, talc, alkaline earth metal carbonates, aluminium silicate or a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid. The composition may also contain (i) up to 20% by wt. of a copolymer of ethylene and an acrylic acid ester or of butadiene and styrene, and (ii) a wax, e.g. paraffin wax or polyethylene wax.

A new polyester contains (a) residues of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and optionally up to 5 mole per cent of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, (b) residues of a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol, and (c) from 0À01 to 2% by weight, calculated on the weight of the polycondensation mixture, of residues of a polyhydric alcohol having more than two hydroxymethyl groups bound to a cyclohexane ring or tetrahydropyran ring. Specified polyhydric alcohols are 1,1,3,3- tetrakis - hydroxymethyl - cyclohexane, 2,2,6,6- tetrakis - hydroxymethyl - cyclohexanol - 1, tetrahydro - 3,3,5,5 - tetrakis - hydroxymethylpyran, and tetrahydro-3,3,5,5-tetrakis-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxypyran. The polyester is preferably a modified polyethylene terephthalate or poly-(1,4-cyclohexyl dimethylene) terephthalate. The polyester may be used as a base for a thermoplastic moulding composition containing also (1) up to 20% by weight of copolymers of ethylene and acrylic acid esters or butadiene and styrene, (ii) a nucleating agent such as kaolin, talc, alkaline earth metal carbonates, aluminium silicate or a sodium salt of a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid, and (ii) a wax, e.g. paraffin wax or polyethylene wax.

A moulding composition comprises, (a) a linear saturated polyester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and optionally up to 10% by weight of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol and (b) 0.05 to 25% by wt. calculated on the total mixture. of a polymer of an ester of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or ethacrylic acid, and a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol containing 1-30 carbon atoms. Polyesters specified are polyethylene terephthalate and polycyclohexane - 1,4 - dimethylol terephthalate, and can contain in addition to terephthalic acid, units of isophthalic, naphthalene-2,6- dicarboxylic and adipic acids, and in addition to ethylene glycol, units of 1,4-butanediol and neopentyl glycol. The polymer (b) may be a homopolymer or copolymer or a mixture of polymers and has a molecular weight of at least 3000, those specified being poly-2-ethylhexylacrylate, poly - 3 - ethylhexylacrylate and poly-n-octyl acrylate. Nucleating agents such as calcium carbonate, aluminium silicate, TiO 2 , talc and soot having a particle size of less than 2 microns may be added at various stages of making the composition. The particulate composition is preferred to have a moisture content of less than 0.01% by wt., and for this purpose the particles are coated with a water repellent paraffin wax or other wax.

A polyester-based moulding composition is made by blending (a) a linear, saturated polyester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol and (b) 0.1% to 10% by weight of the total mixture, of poly-3-methyl butene-1 of molecular wt. above 5000 and of which at least 80% of the particles are 10Á or less in size. The preferred polyesters are polyethylene terephthalate or polycyclohexane - 1,4 - dimethylol terephthalate, and the former containing also units of naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, adipic acid, neopentyl glycol or butane-1,4-diol. Blending methods specified are (1) stirring the finely divided poly-3-methylbutene-1 with the molten polyester, or (2) mixing the granulated components, melting in an extruder, extruding whilst cooling, and then granulating the resulting solid. The composition may also contain nucleating agents such as finely divided calcium carbonate, aluminium silicate or talc.
