Abstract: Novel copolymers comprising 80 to 98% by weight of trioxan, 0 to 10% by weight of a cyclic ether or cyclic formal, and 0.1 to 10% by weight of a bisalkane triol-triformal of the formula in which n and m are integers of 3 to 9, are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a cationic catalyst, and at -50 DEG to + 100 DEG C. Specified triformals are bis-1,2,5-pentane triol triformal and bis-1,2,6-hexane-triol triformal. Specified cyclic ethers and formals are ethylene and propylene oxide, epichlorohydrin, 4-chloromethyldioxolan, glycol formal, and diglycol formal. Specified catalysts are organic and inorganic acids and acid halides, and Lewis acids, e.g. BF3, BF3-etherate, and diazonium fluoroborates. Heat, light and oxidation stabilizers may be incorporated into the copolymers.

Abstract: Copolymers comprise 97.9-88% by weight of trioxane, 2 to 10% by weight of a cyclice ether, and 0.1 to 2% by weight of an alkyl-glycidyl-formal. They are prepared using a cationic catalyst and a temperature range of -50 DEG C. to + 100 DEG C. Specified cyclic ethers are ethylene and propylene oxides, epichlorhydrin, glycol- and diglycol-formal, and 4-chloromethyl dioxolane. Suitable catalysts are inorganic and organic acids, acid halides, and Lewis Acids e.g. BF3 etherates, and diazonium fluoroborates. The polymerization may be in bulk, in solution, or in suspension. The catalysts may be inactivated after polymerisation using e.g. ammonia or a methanolic solution of an aromatic amine. The copolymers may be stabilized against heat by using e.g. polyamides, amides of polybasic carboxylic acids, amidines, and ureas, against oxidation by using e.g. phenols and aromatic amines, and against light by using e.g. a -hydroxybenzophenone derivatives. The copolymers may be formed into foils, films, or fibres, and may also be ground and comminuted.

Abstract: The copolymers described contain from 89.0% to 98.89% of trioxane, from 1.0% to 10.0% of cyclic ethers and/or cyclic formals, and from 0.01% to 1.0% of diglycidyl ether. The cyclic ethers have the formula:- where R1 and R2 each represent an atom of hydrogen or an alkyl gp. of low mol. wt., which may be halogenated, R3 is a methylene or oxymethylene gp., which may have alkyl or halogenated alkyl substituents, and n is a number from 0 to 3. The diglycidyl ethers are derived from unsatd. aliphatic diols contng. from 4-8 C atoms, in either a straight or branched chain.
