Abstract: Hexacyclic-benzothioxanthene (also known as anthrathioxanthene) dyes, comprising at least one substituent selected from sulfonic acid groups, sulfonate groups and sulfonamide groups, are disclosed together with their preparation and use, especially in inks and recording liquids and for use in colouring, dyeing or printing materials. Preferred benzothioxanthene dyes are of the formula I in which R 1 is SO 3 M * right, close parenthesis *or SO 2 NR 4 R 5 and the remaining substituents are as defined in claim 1.
