    Abstract: Bis-betaines of the formula in which R denotes a saturated or an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon radical which has 1 to 3 double bonds and 8 to 22 carbon atoms, n1 and n2 represent an integer from 2 to 3, and n1 and n2 can be identical or different, m1 and m2 represent an integer from 1 to 4, and m1 and m2 can be identical or different, and a, b, c and d, which are identical or different, each is a number from 1 to 5, but the sum (a+b+c+d) should be at most 10. The compounds are prepared from primary amines of the formula RNH2, by dicyanoalkylation, hydrogenation, ethoxylation and reaction with alkali metal salts of omega -halogenocarboxylic acids. They are suitable for formluating cosmetic and industrial cleaning agents.

    Abstract: Betaine-amine oxides of the formula in which R denotes alkyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl, each of which has 8-22 carbon atoms, R1 denotes hydrogen or methyl, R2 denotes ethylene, propylene or 2-hydroxypropylene, R3, R4 and R5 can be identical or different and denote C1-C3-alkyl or a group of the formula or R3 denotes a group of the formula -R2-BR4R5, X denotes a direct bond or a group of the formula -CO-, A and B denote a group of the formulae it being necessary for at least one amine oxide group and at least one betaine group to be present, a denotes 0 or 1, b denotes 1, 2 or 3, n denotes a number from 0 to 10 and m denotes 1, 2 or 3. These compounds are obtained by partially quaternizing the parent polyamines with the alkali metal salt of an omega -halogenocarboxylic acid and then oxidizing the non-quaternized nitrogen atoms. These betaine-amine oxides are suitable for use as surfactants in cleansing agents.

    Abstract: A continuous process for the preparation of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride In the continuous process described for the preparation of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride by reaction, with stirring, of dimethylamine, allyl chloride and alkali metal hydroxide which is dissolved in water, the reaction is carried out in at least two stirred vessels arranged in the form of a cascade. Dimethylamine and allyl chloride in the stoichiometric amount in each case and only 60 to 95 mol % of the stoichiometrically necessary amount of alkal; metal hydroxide are fed to the first stirred vessel and conducted through the vessel at a temperature of 20 to 70.degree.C with a residence time such that the product leaving the vessel and flowing to the further vessels still contains at most 10 mol % of free amine, mol percentages being related to the molar amount of dimethylamine employed; the alkali metal hydroxide lacking in the first stirred vessel compared to the stoichiometric amount is fed continuously to the further stirred vessels mentioned and in these vessels, at a temperature of 20 to 70.degree.C, a residence time is set such that the product leaving the vessel still contains at most 2 mol % of free amine in each case. The desired dimethyldiallylammonium chloride is obtained from the product leaving the stirred vessel cascade.
