Abstract: The preparation of N-alkoxymethyl-lactams by reaction of a lactam, formaldehyde and a hydroxyl group containing compound is novel. An N-alkoxymethyl-lactam (I) of formula (1) is formed by reaction of 1 mole of a lactam (II) of formula (2) with 1-4 moles of formaldehyde (III) and 0.5-6 moles of hydroxyl group containing compounds (IV) consisting of diols and/or diol monoether s of formula (3) or (4). (1) (2) (3) (4) X = -(OCH2-CR H)m - OR or -O-(CH2)n-OR R , R , R = H or 1-6C alkyl l = 3-12 m = 1-20 n = 2-8 Independent claims are included for (i) a process for the production of (I) by mixing (II), (III) and (IV) in a molar ratio of 1:4:0.5-6 in the presence of an acid catalyst at 50-200 degrees C in a single step. (ii) a mixture resulting from the process, containing (I), a N-methylol lactam of formula (5) and an N, N'-methylene bis lactam of formula (6) (iii) a melamine impregnating resin composition containing 1-20 wt.% (with respect to solid melamine resin), (I) or the mixture (ii) as a modifying agent.
