    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new transition metal compound comprising a specific transition metal compound having monocyclopentadienyl compound as a ligand and useful as a catalyst effective in production of a polyolefin by combining with a cocatalyst such as aluminoxane. SOLUTION: This new transition metal compound is represented by formula I [M is a metal of group IIIb, IVb or Vb in the periodic table; R to R are each H, a halogen, a group including a 1-10C hydrocarbon, SiR 3 (R is a halogen, a 1-10C alkyl or a 6-10C aryl), etc.; Y is H, a group including a 1-40C hydrocarbon, OH, a halogen, etc.; (k) is an integer corresponding to the value of the valence number of the transition metal M1 minus 2; A is a bridge; R is H, a halogen, a group including a 1-40C hydrocarbon, SiR 3 , etc.; X is a metal of group Va or VIa in the periodic table] and acts as a catalyst useful for preparation of a polyolefin. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (R is H, a halogen or a group including a 1-40C hydrocarbon) with a nucleophilic or a basic compound and thereafter reacting the product with a metal compound.

    Abstract: A catalyst contains the following components: (A) at least one metal bis(enolate) with each enolate group linked to the metal by a single bond; and (B) at least one chemical compound as a cocatalyst. Also claimed are the following: (i) catalysts prepared by combining (A) and (B); (ii) the above catalysts supported on a carrier; (iii) the preparation of (A) by reacting a metal halide with an alkali metal enolate; (iv) the use of the catalysts for the preparation of functionalised polymers; (v) the preparation of these functionalised polymers using the above catalysts; (vi) functionalised polymers prepared by this method; and (vii) bis(enolate) compounds of formula (IV) and (V): M = Sub-Group III-VI metal, preferably Ti, Zr or Hf; R , R = H, SiR 3 or 1-30C hydrocarbon (e.g. 1-25C alkyl (eg.
