    Abstract: An optical component (100) contains a polymeric medium, which is transparent to electromagnetic radiation and has a second-order susceptibility of at least 10 electrostatic units. This polymeric medium contains compounds having polar-aligned, non-centrosymmetric molecular dipoles which have as a structural element an electron acceptor which is bound to an electron donor via a conjugate pi electron system. As a result, the molar dipole can oscillate between a basic state having a first dipole moment and an electronically excited state having a second dipole moment, differing from the first. The optical component is characterised in that the polymeric medium consists alternately of at least in each case one Langmuir-Blodgett film of at least two polymers having different, non-ionic, nonlinear optical properties (103). In addition to a high mechanical and chemical stability, the optical component according to the invention exhibits excellent nonlinear optical properties, e.g. frequency doubling.
