Abstract: Process is for determining the degree of conversion in the polymerisation of gaseous monomers in a liq. medium. The process involves determination of the density of foam by a radiometric method. Measurement is performed in an appts. attached to the outside of the reactor, in which a sample of latex is expanded to produce the foam. The method is applicable esp. to the continuous polymerisation of vinyl chloride in aq. emulsion, opt, with other comonomers. USE/ADVANTAGE - For (co)polymerisation of vinyl chloride. Process is simple and rapid (ony one parameter measured), and is used to monitor polymerisation over the whole reaction time, enabling trouble-free control of polymerisation and uniform quality of prod.. Unlike other methods, it is not sensitive to temp. variation and non-homogeneity of the reaction mixt.

Abstract: The use of linear glucamide detergents (I) are used as aids in the synthesis or processing of vinyl chloride polymers. Also claimed, are (i) specifically, the use of (I) in the emulsion polymerisation of vinyl chloride (VC) with anionic emulsifier(s) (II) and (ii) is PVC contg. (I). Pref., (I) have the formula R-CO-NR'-Z, with R = 11-17C hydrocarbyl, R' = H or 1-6C alkyl, Z = hexose residue; prods. derived from D-glucose are commercially available; pref. amt. of (I) is 50% w.r.t. total amt. of emulsifier. (II) is, e.g. Na alkane-sulphonate, alkane-sulphate, alkylbenzene-sulphonate or dialkyl-sulphosuccinate. ADVANTAGE - The polymerisation of VC is considerably activated by addn. of (I). this results in shorter reaction times in batch prod., or reduced activator consumption in continuous prod., with good yields and high quality product in each case.

Abstract: Prodn. of PVC comprises emulsion polymerisation of vinyl chloride in aq. medium in the presence of an alkylaryl-sulphonate salt of formula (I) as emulsifier, after which the latex obtd. is dried and the prod. is converted into a paste. R = 4-24C hydrocarbyl; X = halogen or 1-4C alkoxy; M = mono- or di-valent cation (1 equiv.); n = 0.5-3; p = 0-2; and m = 1-4. Also claimed are (i) PVC obtd. by this process; (ii) flexible PVC contg. cpd. (I); 2nd (iii) prepns. contg. 20-80 wt% emulsion-PVC, 0.1-4 wt.% (w.r.t. PVC) cpd(s)> (I), 20-80 wt% plasticiser and opt. conventional additives (to 100%). Pref., the process involves continuous polymerisation or copolymerisation of vinyl chloride with a comonomer, followed by spray drying using a 1- or 2-component nozzle. At least one other surfactant is used in addn. to (I), and (I) is added to the latex before drying, or at the paste prepn. stage. Pref., (I) has R = 10-16C hydrocarbyl, X = Cl, M = Na or K, n = 1-2, p = 0, m = 2, with one sulphonate gp. on each ring. USE/ADVANTAGE - Flexible PVC prepns. (pastes) made from the above prod. are useful for the prod. of transparent coatings and other articles. Use of (I) as emulsifier gives prods. with low paste viscosity, together with greater transparency and lower water absorption than those obtd. by the process described in EP-A 73015 (in which the emulsifier is a cpd. such Na dodecylbenzene-sulphonate).
