    Abstract: The process described relates to the preparation of aqueous betaine solutions by reacting a tertiary amine with an omega -monohalocarboxylic acid, preferably monochloroacetic acid, and alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of water, it being intended that these betaine solutions are ultra pure especially with regard to tertiary starting amine and omega -monohalocarboxylic acid. This is achieved by reacting the three reactants initially at a certain molar ratio with the aim of obtaining a betaine solution which only contains a tolerated amount of starting amine. This aqueous betaine solution is then treated with a sulphonating agent, preferably an alkali metal sulphite, alkali metal pyrosulphite or alkali metal bisulphite for converting the omega -monohalocarboxylic acid which is present into the corresponding sulphocarboxylic acid which is not troublesome. The process described is simple to carry out and results in the abovementioned ultra pure aqueous betaine solutions.

    Abstract: Amidopropyl-N-alkyl-polyhydroxyalkylamines of the following formula (1) in which Z is a linear polyhydroxyhydrocarbon radical having at least 2 free or oxyalkylated hydroxyl groups, R1 is a C1 to C7-alkyl radical or C2 to C4-hydroxyalkyl radical and COR is an aliphatic acyl radical having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and salts thereof from an inorganic or organic acid are described. They are prepared by a) reaction of a compound of the formula (2) with acrylonitrile to give the compound of the formula (3) b) hydrogenation of the product obtained in step a) to give the compound of the formula (4) and c) monoacylation of the product obtained in step b) in the melt to give the compound of the formula (1) mentioned. The compounds according to the invention are readily soluble in water and water/alcohol mixtures and are advantageous co-surfactants for use in detergents and cleaning compositions and in cosmetic preparations for cleansing the hair and skin.

    Abstract: The use of linear glucamide detergents (I) are used as aids in the synthesis or processing of vinyl chloride polymers. Also claimed, are (i) specifically, the use of (I) in the emulsion polymerisation of vinyl chloride (VC) with anionic emulsifier(s) (II) and (ii) is PVC contg. (I). Pref., (I) have the formula R-CO-NR'-Z, with R = 11-17C hydrocarbyl, R' = H or 1-6C alkyl, Z = hexose residue; prods. derived from D-glucose are commercially available; pref. amt. of (I) is 50% w.r.t. total amt. of emulsifier. (II) is, e.g. Na alkane-sulphonate, alkane-sulphate, alkylbenzene-sulphonate or dialkyl-sulphosuccinate. ADVANTAGE - The polymerisation of VC is considerably activated by addn. of (I). this results in shorter reaction times in batch prod., or reduced activator consumption in continuous prod., with good yields and high quality product in each case.

    Abstract: The description relates to amidopropyl-N-alkyl-polyhydroxy alkyl amines of formula (1) in which Z is a linear polyhydroxy hydrocarbon radical with at least 2 possibly oxalkylated hydroxyl groups, R is a C1 to C4 alkyl radical or C2 to C4 hydroxyalkyl radical and COR is an aliphatic acyl radical with 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and to their salts obtained with an inorganic or organic acid. They are produced by: (a) reacting a compound of formula (2) with acrylonitrile to a compound of formula (3), (b) hydrogenating the product obtained in step (a) to a compound of the formula (4) and (c) monoacylating the product obtained in step (b) in the molten state to the compound of said formula (1). The compounds of the invention are easily soluble in water and water-alcohol mixtures and are advantageous co-tensides for use in washing and cleaning products and in cosmetic preparations for cleaning hair and skin.

    Abstract: Antistatic plastic moulding materials contain (A) 94-99.99 wt. % thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic and (B) 0.01-6 wt. % of a cpd. of formula R CONHR N )(R )CH2COO , where R = satd. or unsatd. aliphatic hydrocarbyl with at least 8 C atoms; R = 1-6C alkyl; R , R = symmetrical or unsymmetrical alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or polyoxyalkylene gp. Also claimed are antistatic agents (I). Pref. R = 3C alkyl. The materials may also contain antioxidants, plasticisers, impact modifiers, processing aids, stabilisers, light stabilisers, slip additives, fillers, fire retardants, blowing agents, pigments, colourants, dyes or other antistatics.
