Abstract: 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl compounds of the formula in which R is an n-butyl, isopentyl or phenyl group and A is equal to zero or an equivalent of an inorganic acid are prepared by reducing an n-butyl, isopentyl or phenyl ether of o-nitrophenol in alkaline medium to the 2,2'-alkoxy- or 2,2'-phenoxyhydrazobenzene, followed by rearrangement in acidic medium. The compounds are suitable as components for the preparation of dyes and pigments.
