    Abstract: Copolymers are prepared by polymerising (a) 60-99.99 weight % of trioxane, (b) 0.01-20% of a comonomer (I) where R1 to R4 are hydrogen or 1-3C alkyl, and n is 0 to 4, and (c) 0-20% of a cyclic ether (II) in the presence of a cationic catalyst, at between -50 and +110 deg.C. The copolymers can be processed and shaped in the thermoplastic state; under certain conditions, cross-linked copolymers are obtained. The non-cross-linked copolymers containing free aldehyde groups can be post-reacted.

An oxymethylene copolymer obtained by copolymerizing 60 to 99À99% of formaldehyde or trioxan, 0À01 to 30% of a comonomer containing nitro groups and 0 to 20% of a cyclic ether and/or cyclic acetal in the presence of a cation-active catalyst, suitably at a temperature of -50‹ to +110‹ C., is treated to reduce the lateral nitro groups to primary amino groups. Suitable optional comonomers include ethylene and propylene oxides, epichlorhydrin, 1,4- butane diol-, diethylene glycol- or 1,4-butenediol-formal, 1,4-butane-diol-diglycidyl ether, oxacyclobutane and 1,3-dioxolan. Suitable reducing agents are H 2 /palladium, platinum or Raney-nickel, H 2 S/NH 3 or hydrazine hydrate/ alkali, sodium dithionite or Raney-nickel.
