Abstract: A solid water-repellency-imparting preparation having a porous structure is made from a blend of wax (e.g. paraffin or slack wax) and an organic water-repellant material which is soluble in an organic solvent. The blend of wax and organic water-repellent material may be rendered porous by introducing an inert gas into the melted blend at a temperature above the solidification point thereof and cooling the foamed product thus obtained until it is solid. The inert gas, e.g. air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen, may be introduced into the melt with the aid of frits or alternatively an inert-gas-yielding substance may be added to the melt. Thus solid carbon dioxide or a nitrogen-yielding organic or inorganic substance (e.g. benzenesulphohydrazide or azohexahydrobenzonitrile) soluble in organic solvents may be added to the melt. A small proportion of organic solvent, e.g. 1-10% by weight of benzene or an aliphatic or chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, may be incorporated in the melt. The preferred organic water-repellent material is an alcoholate of a polyvalent metal, e.g. aluminium, zirconium or titanium. These compounds may be used in a form in which one or more of the valencies of the metal are satisfied by monobasic organic acidic substances such as carboxylic acids (e.g. fatty acids or aromatic monocarboxylic acids) or their anhydrides, monosulphinic acids, monosulphonic acids, phosphonic acids or organic monosulphuric acid- or phosphoric acid-esters. The alcoholates may also be branched by metaloxygen linkages (i.e. one or more valencies of the metal may be satisfied by an oxygen atom connected to a further polyvalent metal atom and the remaining valencies of this second metal atom may be satisfied in the same ways as those of the first metal atom). These modified alcoholates may be stabilized to a considerable extent by keto-enol compounds (e.g. acetoacetic ester) to prevent premature decomposition by moisture. Other organic water-repellent materials mentioned are neutral salts of polyvalent metals with lower and higher carboxylic acids, basic hydroxyl-containing salts, carboxylic acid anhydrides, e.g. stearic acid methylolamide, N,N1-ethylene ureas, copolymers of maleic acid or its esters with high molecular weight vinyl ethers, derivatives of polymethylol amino- or polyazirino-triazines (i.e. triazines which contain ethylene imine groups) containing high molecular weight aliphatic groups and high molecular weight organic isocyanates. Specifications 767,585, 777,466, 780,967, 783,605 and 790,624 are referred to.
